European Crossword Puzzle #14
Message: This is the 14th thread of the European Crossword Travel/Geography/Culture game. It is a continuation of this thread:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34557519
Here are the rules of the game (for new comers) [I've just pasted the rules from the start of the previous thread.]:
1) Whoever guesses the word correctly gets to build on THAT word to make the new word. In cases of multiple correct answers, whoever posts first is the winner and gets to choose the next word.
2) Make sure all the words are travel related somehow. Your word could be a person, a place, an event, an object.
3) State what letter you're building on from the previous word.
4) State the position of that letter in your new word.
5) State how many letters in the new word.
6) Give us a good clue!
7) Again, all words should be travel-related.
yk will give the clue shortly.

Artist #1 (4,7) had a rather fascinating life story.
He & his parents moved to (country: 4 - not in Europe) when he was a young child, but his father died during the voyage. His mother died when he was a teenager, and he traveled all over the world as a marine. He then returned to his birthplace (city: 5) and became a successful banker. He was introduced to painting after he met artist #2 (7,8). Artist #2 was of the same nationality (6) as the wife of artist #1.
"n" from Iles Malouines is the last letter of last name of artist #1.

This village, (8), is on the route to a better known tourist spot (6) and is characterized by red tile roofs on the houses clinging to steep slopes and also shops selling rugs and weavings. The better-recognized tourist site and the Red Hat Society have some "philosophical commonalities". These places are in the country of (6).
The "E" in Peru is the third letter of the country.

I was just guessing with the country clue. I guess Greece would be a better fit: < red tile roofs on the houses clinging to steep slopes and also shops selling rugs and weavings >
Anyway, I'll guess I'll let someone else solve it. It's way past my bedtime.

Are you thinking of the Oracle at Delphi? But how do you know that Pythia (I guess the prophetress?) is 50?
