OPPS ... I guess that was all of the answers, but I am not sure the second answer is a word used anymore, unlike the word BOYCOTT, which was coined some years later during the "land-wars".

Wow!

cmt Jan 3rd, 2005 11:36 AM

What timing! I just happened to check and there's your answer.

Ger, isn't it Ballinglass?
You have all of the answers (except I think the name of the incident/village is Ballinglass).

It's your turn to post a clue. See the first post for instructions (or you can just tell how it works from looking at the last few).

(And here 111op thought I always make up puzzles about Basilicata....)

OReilly Jan 3rd, 2005 11:44 AM

Sorry, you are right, it IS Ballinglass. Very impressive cmt!

I'll work on the next one :)

regards Ger

cmt Jan 3rd, 2005 03:33 PM

And very impressive, Ger. (I just asked the questions. You're the one who answered them!)

yk Jan 5th, 2005 03:40 PM

What's going on?
OReilly?
Anyone?????

OReilly Jan 5th, 2005 03:59 PM

Sorry for the delay.

As I am reading the History of Rome, let's have a Roman theme. Three place names:

Place 1: "I've found it!". In this Italian town, the famous bather’s life was ended.
Eight letters. The A from Potato is the fourth letter in word

Place 2: An uncle by marriage of Julius Caesar defeated the northern invaders just north of this French town.
Three words (3-2-8), second letter of second word is the N from Ballinglass.

Place 3: Island of pleasure for the adopted son of an august emperor.
Five letters. First letter of word is first letter in Colcannon.

Regards Ger

It looks like Ger hasn't answered too many threads lately....

Why don't I give one and Ger can give one when (s)he's back?

Clue: He (3 words: 3, 3, 4) died in the middle of the 15th century and was court painter to (person: 3 words, 6, 3, 4), also known as the (title: 3 words, 4, 2, 8). Famous pieces include an altarpiece at (place: 5 letters), which features this animal (4 letters); a portrait of a couple called (name: 9 letters); and finally, Chancellor (name: 5) to the person who hired him as court painter. The second painting is in (city: 6) and the third painting is in (city: 5).

2nd letter of 3rd word of painter's name is "y." (This should make things easier.)

111op Jan 5th, 2005 04:02 PM

Ah, we've the real McCoy! :-)

Ok, I'll work on this tomorrow, but I'm sure that yk will beat me to it.

Good night for now.

111op Jan 5th, 2005 04:04 PM

Place 1 = Syracuse (Archimedes)
Place 3 = Capri

111op Jan 5th, 2005 04:06 PM

Place 2=Aix-en-Provence (Gaius Marius in battle of Aquae Sextiae).

Now I don't feel so bad jumping ahead of you, Ger.

Anyway, I need to go. I'll check back tomorrow. If I got anything wrong, just let me know. If I got the clue, then you've the next one to work on.

111op Jan 5th, 2005 04:08 PM

And if I'm right and my clue is the current clue, then whoever gets it can just continue without my confirmation, of course.

OReilly Jan 5th, 2005 04:47 PM

He (3 words: 3, 3, 4 Jan van Eyck) died in the middle of the 15th century and was court painter to (person: 3 words, 6, 3 Philip the Good,), also known as the (title: 3 words, 4, 2, 8 Duke of Burgundy). Famous pieces include an altarpiece at (place: 5 letters Ghent), which features this animal (4 letters Lamb); a portrait of a couple called (name: 9 letters The Arnolfini Marriage); and finally, Chancellor (name: 5 Rolin ) to the person who hired him as court painter. The second painting is in (city: 6 London) and the third painting is in (city: 5 Paris ).

Interesting: I was feeling under the weather today and was browsing my art books. :) Am I right???

Regards Ger

111op Jan 6th, 2005 02:56 AM

Yes, of course! I'll be making a lot of art questions. :-)

So you go again.

cmt Jan 6th, 2005 05:16 PM

Ger's turn again!

Meanwhile, if anyone's impatient to solve a puzzle, there's one on the Francophile forum that has been unsolved since Dec. 28. Maybe you can solve it and get that thread moving again. Scroll to the end of this thread: http://forums.delphiforums.com/PBPro...ges?msg=3840.1

111op Jan 7th, 2005 06:40 AM

Should I jump ahead of Ger again? :-)

OReilly Jan 7th, 2005 03:07 PM

I'm here, I'm here :)

Honey-hued bastide town (5 letters) built by Phillipe the Bold overlooks river named for the region (8 letters) [Second letter of each word is "O"]

Cistercian monastery housed Christ's turban (7 Letters) [6th letter is "i"]

Gardens of cacti and palms in this 16th century village (2-5-6) [first letter, first word is "L"]

regards Ger

Huitres Jan 7th, 2005 10:15 PM

Ger: I got 3/4 of your clue figured out, however, I'm stumped re: the cactus gardens part. Any other hint(s) you can give? :)

OReilly Jan 8th, 2005 06:43 AM

The troglodytic forts in the cliff-face above the village were part of an elaborate defensive system

Good luck Huitres
