European cars: Have cigarette lighters for U.S. cellphone chargers?

Renting a Mercedes A-Class -- if that helps.

Every European rental car I've had had a cigarette lighter that worked with my phone.

If they do not (like the Toyota Aygo) then they have a 12 volt socket the same size as a lighter for you to use.

They tend not to have the actual cigarette lighter in them any more, but they always have a 12 volt socket.

You have to pay extra for a cigarette lighter and ashtrays nowadays - the so called smokers pack. Since car hire companies don't want you smoking in their cars, and don't spend any more than they have to they don't buy the smokers pack.

You may have to look for the socket - it may not be obvious.
