5. Neuschwanstein in Bavaria
8. Madonna

FuryFluffy Dec 21st, 2016 10:31 AM

4- Chambord castle, there is no compare (in size) between it and other Loire chateaux

5- Neuschwanstein Castle, nicknamed Sleeping Beauty Castle because it was the model for it. I haven't been there but everybody knows which is the most visited castle in Europe^^

6- I was going to guess Buckingham Palace, but a palace is not a castle (I sure don't know the difference!), so I go with Windsor Castle.

Merry Christmas to you too, Pal.

6. Windsor Castle.

10. Hampton Court

thursdaysd Dec 21st, 2016 10:46 AM

Since when is Hampton Court a castle???

PalenQ Dec 21st, 2016 10:50 AM

Since when is Hampton Court a castle???>

It's not =that's why I said in Q palace - I would have put that in the title but originally wanted only castles but ran out of castle ideas by the last question!

Some say Neuschwanstein is a palace- many of the Loire chateaus are more like palaces than Hampton Court.

But yes you are right on.

All correct so far!

Trophywife007 Dec 21st, 2016 02:16 PM

9. Prince Charles' London residence: is it Clarence House? It used to be St. James, I think.

Merry Christmas to you too, PalQ.

all rest answered correctly

grandmere Dec 22nd, 2016 08:58 AM

Just a wild guess for #2: Haut Koenigsbourg?

Treesa Dec 22nd, 2016 09:30 AM

#3. Town of Bracciano.

Pvoyageuse Dec 22nd, 2016 09:39 AM

1. Versailles

PalenQ Dec 22nd, 2016 09:43 AM

#3 is right from Treesa

#1 is not Versailles - is a palace but still I think not nearly as a behemoth as this castle in central Europe.

Treesa Dec 22nd, 2016 09:48 AM

#1. Malbork.

Pvoyageuse Dec 22nd, 2016 11:25 AM

1. Bran castle?

PalenQ Dec 22nd, 2016 12:41 PM

Malbork it is - over twice as large as #2 in a neighboring country.

#2 #7 still out

Pvoyageuse Dec 22nd, 2016 01:08 PM

7. Manheim to Prague

Cowboy1968 Dec 22nd, 2016 01:49 PM

Some say Neuschwanstein is a palace..

Well, it is a palace. It cannot be a "castle" as it has no strategic features for defence. Just the looks of an old castle. It's indeed as much as a "castle" as the one in Disneyland.

Castles are fortifications (typically before 15th century), palaces are residences (without meaningful features for defence, typically after 15th century).
The "look" of the building is irrelevant, though, to distinguish a castle from a palace.

PalenQ Dec 22nd, 2016 02:30 PM

It's called Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disney- I agree N is a palace and I should have said palaces and castles in question.

N is still the most famous 'castle' to Americans when asked to say which castle they like and know.

#7 now right.

#2 remains but here it is - Prague Castle according to several sources.

Thanks for playing!

type Neuschwanstein into a Google search box and all that comes up is Neuschwanstein Castle- good or not it's called a castle.

Are the chateaus of the Loire castles - well they are called chateaus or castles not palaces which in effect most are in the strict use of the term. Chateau is a castle - chateau fort are fortified castles- Newuschwanstein is a castle but not a fortified one in the broad sense of the word.

WoinParis Dec 23rd, 2016 08:50 AM

Ask my daughter and she'll say the castle at DLP is a castle.
So Neuschwanstein qualifies ;-)

What does Galore mean ?

WoinParis Dec 23rd, 2016 08:52 AM

ARRRGH

Some did it again ! it is ChateauX. Like drapeaux, chameaux, seaux etc.
Never a 's' after a 'au' or 'eau'. une eau, des eaux.

If not stick to castle. Rant from the frenchspeaker over.

Next lesson : ou.
Choux hiboux, cailloux, genoux, poux.
but matous, papous, etc.

No it is English I was writing not French -I said chateaus of not de la Loire - chateaus is the plural in English of chateau, which is of course a word in English - I know enough French to know that it is chateaux in French but we're speaking de English here!

Who are you to tell others how to write right their language!

Cheers!

Country with the most castles per quare km?

Czech Republic.

thursdaysd Dec 23rd, 2016 09:26 AM

"chateaus is the plural in English of chateau"

Not according to my OED, which even has the word in italics, presumably meaning it is a foreign word, although used by English speakers.

Perhaps you meant American rather than English?

WoinParis Dec 23rd, 2016 09:46 AM

ChateauS is ugly.
Like pizzaS.
Do I say pizzaS ?
Err yes I do.
Still.

PalenQ Dec 23rd, 2016 10:00 AM

ChateauS is ugly.>

That should be "chateaus ARE ugly" and beauty yes is in de eye of the beholder.

pizza is both singular and plural- like deer and many collective nouns

you and yous - either are acceptable for more than one - are yous going to the store.

Too didactic for you(s)- ???

Pvoyageuse Dec 23rd, 2016 11:01 AM

"Never a 's' after a 'au' or 'eau'. une eau, des eaux. "
But un landau, des landaus

thursdaysd Dec 23rd, 2016 11:02 AM

"That should be "chateaus ARE ugly""

No, it should not. The subject of the sentence is the word "chateaus", not multiple chateaux.

"Yous" is horrible slang. If you really want a plural use ya'll or you all.

PalenQ Dec 23rd, 2016 11:12 AM

The three chateaus ARE far apart -yes

The three chateaus is far apart - no

Substitute castles for chateaus - same thing.

That said online dictionaryjust checked says plural in English of chateau is cheateaux so scrap all that I've said and WoeinParis is right and others too.

As for 'you' and 'yous'- 'yous' is proper and not slang - not used much and 'you' can mean a plural - I just use it for fun- like chateaus.
