May, without question is a better time to go to those places than is August.

I haven't been there in May, but I've been in London twice in August (including just last year) and it was very nice. The weather certainly wasn't hot (it never has been when I've been there in August), it was quite nice. I just needed a slight sweater or wrap for evening. I guess there were crowds, I don't know -- I've been there before so didn't go to the main tourist attractions, just the theater and some museums like the Tate and V&A, which weren't particularly crowded. I mainly went to go to the BBC Proms concerts and they were wonderful, as usual, and those are only in August.

I'm sure the southern cities would be horrible in August, though. Paris maybe a bit dull but not that bad.

Hi Susan,
As a tourguide/Londoner I would go for May. Although over the last few years London has had fewer visitors. However, you are likely to encounter long lines for places like Westminster Abbey (unless you take my tour of course)! The weather is better in July though, so it's crowds v weather regarding London. I think this will also apply to Paris. So mid-day temperatures in May around 60-65f and 70-80f in July, very unpredictable though! I'd go for May in Italy too!
Have a great trip.

Also applies to August, hotter and more crowded!
Mike

Definitely go in May. The weather is much better and the airfare will be cheaper. The summer rates usually start in the beginning or mid June, and in May you may be able to get airfare for under $500 from East Coast.
