Europe in Early Sept. -- Is it too late?
DH & I usually travel in early Sept. I was prevented from planning in advance like I would have liked & now wonder if it's too late to book decent flights to Europe. Does anyone have any recommendations for getting good airfares ($400-$500/person) for Europe for 2 weeks in early Sept? We could fly from Burlington, VT (BTV), New York or Boston. Have been to France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland & Slovenia and wouldn't mind going again or someplace new. We like combining cultural (museums) with hikes/walks & have always rented cars. We like to visit large cities for 1-2 days but prefer spending majority of time in countryside. Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

I've noticed flights are about the same as when I purchased in late May 2010 for September. I did not see the sale I was expecting, and just lucked into flights in our budget (I was getting antsy - I do not like waiting until a month before to buy flights).
I agree with others - I think $400-$500 is unreasonable, though you might get lucky. I think, in my research, European flights to major cities are in the $700-$800 range this year, though I bow to the experts. Can't hurt to look, though. I should add I am from the US - I do not know if that would make much of a difference.

Haven't seen prices like that in a long time. What I would do, while looking, is be very flexible. Don't just look for flights out of an airport near you, look at places that are a train ride /Southwest flight away. I live 20 mins from a major international airport, but I have on several occasions driven 1.5 hrs to another smaller airport in order to get a good deal.
Also look at package deals. I've used Expedia for some good hotel + flight combos.
