The Oslo-Bergen train ride is amongst the Top 5 Scenic trains i've ridden in four decades of incessant European train riding - well worth the detour from Scandinavia proper - and the Norway in a Nutshell day trip from Bergen is one of the very most awesome things i've done in Europe - the fjord boat trip was incredible - even saw some whales. The thrilling mountain train from Flan to Myrdhal - really sweet.

roads can take you across similar scenery but it is easy to go by railway - one of Europe's most dramatically scenic railways - from Bergen you can easily cover the several hundred miles back to Oslo by an overnight train or take a boat to Stavanger then take another really scenic train line back to Oslo.
