Europe airfare sale

I noticed today that Northwest Airlines/KLM have started a Valentine's Day Europe airfare sale, with (before taxes) fares going as low as $114 Boston-A'dam and $129 Detroit-Paris. I assume the other airlines will match it. I think tickets have to be purchased by Jan 31 and the fares are good for travel thru the end of Feb.

Those are one-way fares, of course!

Not bad. The best deal for DC is $312RT (includes all taxes/fees) nonstop to/from Amsterdam.

Do you know that the dates are for this?

For some reason, for the long weekend Feb 18-21 for NYC to Europe, the fares are quite high. I even called 1800flyeurope and they said that they had *nothing* available (well, they did have a flight out on Feb 18 for London that left at 7am in the morning).

It's bizarre. Isn't this the low season?

Holy cow! I could theoretically go Tulsa to Paris in mid Feb for $332 (that's including all taxes)!!! That's cheaper than most domestic destinations for me right now.

111op--try Travelocity's flexible dates feature.

Thanks -- I guess my dates are not flexible, but I'm amazed that a few days can make such a difference.... There seems to be something going on the weekend of Feb 18.

Northwest/KLM has an ATL - LON fare for $178 r/t! Plan to depart the United States from Feb. 7-19 and finish your trip by Feb. 22 (include a Saturday night stay). Travel Mondays-Thursdays each way or pay a $10 one-way weekend supplement.

111op - I don't know about the rest of Europe, but it's the school half-term break here.

But then why would it be so hard to find tickets to Europe from NYC (if it's break there)? It's really bizarre....

Well, I guess it's not that difficult -- American is only asking for 1700 (?) to fly Economy from NYC to London that weekend.... There're cheaper airlines, but still, London is not cheaper than the other destinations (when it usually is).

It's strange.

If anyone is finding fares less than about $800 (including taxes, etc.) from the West Coast (SF) to Italy, puhleeze post here!

Oops! Travel date is end of April. I'm finding reasonable fares through about the middle of March; after that they almost double. I know the fares will be higher after March, but double?

Betsy
You may want to look into flying to London and then using a budget airline such as Ryan Air to fly to Italy. That will save some money and you can spend some time in London. Last Feb I flew from London to Rome for 38 GBP RT. Also, a great website for budget travel in Europe is whichbudget.com.

Check those air fares to Europe on the www.mobissimo.com aggregator site as well.

RJ, thanks for your suggestion. SF to London is about $650 + about $100 in taxes. Ryan or Easy Jet is another $100 RT London to Rome. So the total is almost $800, which is about the same as not having to change carriers. Sigh...

I'm checking Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, ITA Software, Mobissimo, Sidestep, Cheapflights, and the individual airlines. Posted a message on Eurotrip, hoping Don would respond, but he hasn't.

Welcome any further suggestions.

I guess that could be it, caroline. Tickets to London seem more expensive than usual for that weekend, and what's surprising is that tickets to the rest of Europe aren't cheap either.

Betsy, how long is your trip, and how flexible are the dates, and what cities are you willing to fly into and out of?

I'd suggest that you "top" your message on EuroTrip, because I don't see it on the first page. So maybe Don missed it.

And make sure the message is in the Cheap Flights forum. I just don't see it is all.

I got a great fare on NW (Detroit to Gatwick) for $376 (taxes included.) And I had a $179 voucher to put towards the purchase (from a previously cancelled business trip.) So my final cost for my ticket was $197! I'm a happy flier!
