Europe

I'm going to be in Europe for about a month next year (2017) during the month of July. I was wondering if their is any good places/ideas to celebrate/do for the Fourth of July? And don't say that they don't celebrate it because I've celebrated it in Germany a couple of years ago.

Why would anyone in Europe celebrate it? If you mean Americans in Europe then I could see the point. I'd wait 10 days and celebrate the slaughter that was the French revolution.

I've never seen any celebrations in Belgium, France, the Netherlands. Maybe somewhere with a large US expat community? I'm sure there will be American bars and restaurants that do something.

Europeans don't celebrate 4th of July, generally.

The American consulates and embassies in Italy typically host parties, but you would need an invitation, and don't expect fireworks. These are largely quasi-political events, where the people who routinely do business with the American government come to rub shoulders.

While this does not qualify as a celebration, it is possible that the American military cemeteries have special observances on the Fourth of July. I have only been to the American military cemetery just outside Florence (easily reached by bus) and I happened to be there on the day Italians commemorate the liberation of Italy from Fascist rule, and there was a moving ceremony. The cemetery itself is quite interesting, with a very large wall monument that is a map with pictorial reliefs that detail the American military invasion of Italy in WW2, and of course, acres of white crosses, stars of David and crescents to mark the graves, lined up in military precision.

There are also a couple of active military bases in Italy where no doubt there are parties, including with hot dogs and fireworks. Perhaps various American-associated institutes in Italy, like the American Academy in Rome, do something. Again, you would need to be in contact in advance.

Why would Europeans celebrate July 4th? Do Americans celebrate July 14th? Now, if you're talking about American military bases, or American expats, that's different.

(Nice one, Mark)

I seriously doubt you would even be admitted to any US Forces base in Europe unless you have a valid DD Form 2 and if you did you'd know what it is.

I've been to Europe multiple times during July 4th and have NEVER seen a "celebration" for the US' "independence." For what its worth - I have been to Germany and France on this day (and recently) ---and nothing. But, I supposed I wasn't a tunnel-visioned traveler and looking for it.

US bases (ALL over Germany, my dear) sure...they are US bases. Other US sites (i.e. cemeteries that Sandralist stated) might have something. But these are going to be ceremonies, not a party. If you have an invitation to a consulate or embassy (not likely) go ahead and go. But they don't let every American in to celebrate. In fact, their offices my be closed on that day since they are federal agencies.

If you want a USA party - stay in the USA. Otherwise, go to Europe and explore European way of life.

This is a new poster, first and only post. Wonder if it's a troll?

In London you can check out Time Out; if anything is going on, they will mention it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a celebration of Bastille Day in a Frech restaurant in New York City, or even an art gallery or some other place that wanted to throw a French-themed party.

Some of you people should get out more.

Also, while one definitely wants to arrange in advance with the American consulates in Italy to attend any July 4 celebrations they might be having, most would probably be happy to have an American citizen join in. I've only been to one or two in Genova, and they are not elaborate (the consulates are not given a lot of money to host these things) but they can be charming (if it's not too hot.)

There is at least one place that celebrates the 4th of July with gusto - Rebild, Denmark:

But any other celebrations are miniscule if at all unless yes near American Military bases.

It's a troll, stupid.

I have been 56 times on 4th of July in Germany and, of course, never ever someone took notice of an event that happened far away in a strange country.

Whether the Americans have their 4th of July or a sack of rice falls down in China, it is the same for us.

Such celebarations except at Rebild, which has a museum on American Immigration in honor of the Danes who immigrated to America are rare but at some places like the American Church in Paris there is:

http://www.outandaboutinparis.com/20...-american.html

There used to be a restaurant called Coleman's at Les Halles that had a special deal on the 4th but it was mainly for Americans as such celebrations are meant for. It's an American thing as traveller1958 says - when is the last time you saw Bastille Day celebrated in the U.S.

A troll? Who cares? Could be but so what - interesting topic.

I am not a troll @yhursdays. @travelnerd, I'm going to Europe for a couple of weeks for a school trip with my cuz, who's in high school, and who invited me, and I am planning on staying over there for 30 more days, and it just happens to be in London, which is where the tour ends, and I wanted to do some sightseeing in London for a couple of days. Thanks guys,

In that case, Time Out will tell you everything you need to know about what's on in London.
Have a good trip!

I am not a troll @yhursdays.>

Let me apologize for some Fodorgarchs (who are aloof ever to apologize themselves... very saying) who automatically label a first-time poster just registered with being nefarious and being a troll - happens over and over and over- wrongly accused - do not throw the baby out with the dirty bathwater however and ask more questions and you'll get some great advice on Fodor's IMO (and some rude comments too... but)
