Three Months Visit to Madrid

I want to experience life in Madrid and plan to rent an apartment for 3-6 months this fall. What is the best way to rent an apartment for my stay?

#1 - confirm you are allowed to stay in Spain for 6mo. If you are a US Citizen you can normally stay in Spain (or anywhere in the Schengen treaty zone of Europe) for a total of 90days without any visa. Beyond that you need a long stay visa, otherwise you'll be considered an illegal immigrant.

Yes - where are you from? to add to J62's post - a long stay visa is not just a mere formality.

Unless you have some special circumstance (like you are from a Schengen country) - plan on just 90 days. Not 91, not 97 - exactly 90 or less.

Are you looking to live alone or share a flat? Sharing a flat will not only cut expenses but you'll also avoid (probably) having your name on the paperwork - an issue which may be problematic for a multi-month, yet non-long-term stay.

Most owners/agencies only want to rent for a minimum of one-year. Shorter stays may well put you in the "Holiday Rental" class which charges very high rates per day.

Take a look at http://www.idealista.com/pagina/port...a&localeRef=en for a number of rentals in Madrid.

Best of luck!

When renting ask the agency what THEIR fees are. Also, many times do not expect utilities to be included unless stated in contract.

Also be sure the IBI and Basura tax are included. These are two taxes that can legally be passed on to the renter if not otherwise stated in the contract.

According to Spanish law the owners have 30 days to return the deposit. Get this problem figured out ahead of time at lest with a verbal agreement and a witness.

Most long term non-vacation rentals will not have a phone line activated which will also be your responsibility.

Sharing an apt. will help you avoid all of the above.

Do not sign anything in Spanish without an interpreter.
