Oh, Wasley, so I shouldn't have booked a hotel in the center of Florence because I had a car? It just so happens that I was spending only one night in Florence and leaving the next day to go to Bagni di Lucca. I left my friends in Florence and picked them up several days later. I parked that night outside the ZTL. I only drove into the ZTL to drop my friends and our luggage off at the hotel, which, as I said, has always been permissible, and, in fact, is still permissible if your hotel registers your car. I don't think I am a laughing stock. My biggest regret in posting my experience is that you may have benefited from it because you probably learned something you didn't know (and may thus be able to avoid a four hundred dollar surprise seven months after your visit), despite your encyclopedic knowledge of Italy and its customs and your prodigious command of both Italian and English.
