Euro tunnel
 

I'm planning a trip from London to Sweden via the Eurotunnel. When I check out costs it says a one way ticket (Folkestone to Calais) costs 71£ but if I order a roundtrip ticket I can get one for 51£. Is there any reason not to order the roundtrip ticket and just chuck the return?

I'm assuming you are driving.

Generally the ferries and Eurotunnel get rather upset if people buy day returns and don't return - especially if they come back the same way a few weeks later and do exactly the same thing. You are likely to find that they will charge you the full one way fare. So if you do return use a different company to cross the Channel

If it isn't a day return ticket then you shouldn't have any problems

In days gone by cheap day return ticket holders could not carry any luggage

Ferries are cheaper on the whole. I used to use Eurotunnel all the time but stopped when it got too expensive, and they got increasingly strict on which train you could take, and then frequently cancelled it without reason.

Both Eurotunnel and the ferry services, like airlines do not like you using a return and throwing away half of it. You name could get flagged should you want to travel with them again. But as Alan says if you use a different company for your return you should get away with it.

Given the price of fuel nowadays it may be cheaper to get the ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg (DFDS)and cut out a great chunk of driving, unless you are set on seeing Belgium/Netherlands/Germany on your way.

PAl - since Eurotunnel is cars only there is no way for them to know if you have luggage or not.

Thanks so much for the input. Yes, it's a car we'll be taking on the train and we won't be going back as we're taking the ferry to the UK and driving home. Part of the thing for us is travelling through the tunnel and then going on through the other countries. I know it sounds silly, especially when you think about the price of gas and how much everything else costs. Just seemed a bit od that the round trip was cheaper, but I think that's what we'll go with.
