Euro Trivia Quiz #9 - Europe's Biggest Market Place...
and one of its biggest town squares, according to Wiki Travel, almost rivaling Moscow's Red Square and the Vatican's St Peter's in size - which Belgian town would this be?
Only question and one for the experts! Wiki:" Market Square - Belgium's largest market square, almost rivals Moscow's Red Square and the Vatican's St.Peter's Square in size. The Belgian town is............... have you ever been there? |
Not sure if Wiki is right, Arras is pretty enormous
I thought it was Krakow
The Rynek in Krakow is listed with 4 ha - there are two promising candidates in Germany, namely Heide and Freudenstadt, both with over 4.5 ha.
No it's in Belgium and when I was there the tourist office literature called it Europe's largest square - but it is really number 3, according to Wiki and yes Wiki may be wrong at times.
Bruges?
Brussels??
Grand Place in Brussels? It's a beautiful space but I'm not sure if it's the largest I've visited.
Nope - this city is off the radar for tourists - the only reason I knew about it was when leading folks on bike trips from Gent to Antwerp we made a pit stop in this surprisingly interesting city.
Hint- Christmas! |
I had never heard of that town before - but I guess they must be right when it's endorsed by Santa Claus ;-)
Not endorsed by took his name (or vice versa)!
Sint Niklaas ?
Yes you said the magic word and down comes the duck with 100 french francs!
Sint Niklaas makes a neat stop if going between Gent and Antwerp by car, train or bike - by bike you go on to use the Tunnel under the river to enter Antwerp from the southwest corner.
100 FF? in Belgium? :-))
Sint Niklaas has the largest square in Belgium, not Europe. Krakow's square is 4hectare, Sint Niklaas "only" 3.5 .
Size is not always what matters. I'm sure you've heard that before. I visited the biggest market in Africa in Addis Ababa and it certainly was not the best market I have ever seen.
But Krakow's square's acreage - does it include that market building or whatever it is in the center of the square - what does size mean - empty space or does it include buildings in the square and the acreage they occupy? If so Krakow may be less than 3.5 ha?
I've not seen Krakow square anywhere like filled with market. They fill Arras ;-)
Krakow is officially the largest in Europe PalenQ.
