Euro Travel Quiz # 38

Back again by popular demand! (Thanks to you both!)

1- The large famous castle near Maidstone (Kent), England is known amongst other things for its Dog Collar Museum?

2- every august 1st the Switzerland celebrates the birth of the Swiss Confederation in this meadow where the original confedration was decreed - what is the name of the meadow and what lake does it overlook?

3- Switzerland's Chocolate Train is a special tourist train that runs between XXXXXX and XXXXX and then onto XXXXXX before returning to where it started.

4- The Battle of Alesia or Siege of Alesia took place in September, 52 BC, around the Gallic oppidum of Alesia, a major town centre and hill fort of the Mandubii tribe. It was fought by an army of the Roman Republic commanded by Julius Caesar, aided by cavalry commanders Mark Antony, Titus Labienus and Gaius Trebonius, against a confederation of Gallic tribes united under the leadership of Vercingetorix of the Arverni. It was the last major engagement between Gauls and Romans, marking the turning point of the Gallic Wars in favour of Rome. The Siege of Alesia is considered one of Caesar's greatest military achievements and a classic example of siege warfare and investment. The battle of Alesia can safely be described as marking the end of Celtic dominance in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Northern Italy. (Wiki)
Q - Where can you see the actual battle area of Alesia (what region of what country)?

5- What European capital city is but about a one-hour train ride from Vienna?

6- To get to Fountains Abbey by foot from Ripon, Engalnd you can walk thru this large park that includes the ruined abbey as a part of it - what is the name of the park?

7- When Mark Twain climbed Switzerland's Mt Rigi (before there was a train or gondola going to the summit) to catch the sunrise once there he complained about the incessant tooting of this instrument? (To me the Swiss equivalent of Bag Pipes - which emit an obnoxious screeching - bag pipes I read in a book on Ireland -" originated in Ireland who gave them to the Scots, who never got the joke."

8- Folks without a fixed address can get mail in Europe at post offices with the European equivalent of General Delivery - which is called in many countries, such as France: ???

9- Paris and other French cities has things dubbed 'Vespachiens' which is a play on what word and what are they for?

10 - Name the concentration camp - Nazi - about 20 miles north of Berlin? You can take a train or S-Bahn to the city of the same name and then walk about a half-mile to the memorial's entrance.

Good luck - winner gets a valuable prize to be announced later (plus S & H)!

Percy if available will act as abitrator of any disputes and judge correctness of answers!

6 Studley Royal maybe

PalenQ Jan 21st, 2015 08:37 AM

Yes one down nine to go! And it's a lovely but rather long walk from Ripon - first going thru a forest along a stream then thru the gates of Studely Royal for a few miles.

There is a paucity of public transportation from anywhere to Fountains Abbey so if arriving in Ripon by bus foot is about the only way save a gtaxi and an odd sporadically run bus I hear.

1. Leeds Castle

PalenQ Jan 21st, 2015 09:11 AM

percy? I'd say quokka is the sure winner with all 5 correct. Needs percy's offical OK however before the big prize can be awarded!

MaineGG - if correct IMO on Alesia - a rather untouristed but amazing site when I visited several years ago - French campers were sleeping on the site, which at that time was unfenced and free.

And now #1 falls. Leeds Castle one of the most heavily promoted castles a few years back but to me not living up to its heavily promoted hype, dog collars or not! But a lovely setting on a lake in a rural setting. Really looks pretty from the outside but at least to me a let down inside but as castles go from looks - spankingly nice!

#3 and #9 remain.

Percy Jan 21st, 2015 09:52 AM

Looks like quokka is the winner.

Bratislava is a nice place and many commute to work in Vienna.

hint For # 3 : about the Swiss Train..... you stop hallway almost to sample some cheese !
the final destination rhymes with Clock.!!

hint for # 10:

Think of doggy poop.

Think of Roman Emperor Vespasian !!!

Bye for now have to get going :)

Percy Jan 21st, 2015 11:03 AM

I mean hint for # 9 not # 10

PalenQ Jan 21st, 2015 12:19 PM

Yeh percy - that would be very bad giving hints for that concentration camp!

and yup the Emperor Vespasienne is said to have introduced the Turkish Toilet to Gaul!

annhig Jan 21st, 2015 12:27 PM

well , it's lucky that you disqualified me, Pal, cos I could barely do any of these. I did know Bratislava, Leeds Castle, Sachsenhausen and Poste Restante, but not the rest.

PalenQ Jan 21st, 2015 12:50 PM

anhig - I override percy - you of all people will never be disqualified - you are I presume above reproachment and corruption!

Percy Jan 21st, 2015 07:41 PM

Hey PalenQ but annhig being the kind pleasant cheerful, happy unselfish person that she is I knew that for a few of the quizzes she would disqualify herself.

Okay she can enter back in. :)

How about that built up I gave annhig !

annhig Jan 22nd, 2015 01:26 AM

percy - you know me so well!

PalenQ Jan 22nd, 2015 09:34 AM

we don't know the real annhig! and everyone has their level of corruption - all humans can be corrupted - if the stakes are high enough.

Percy Jan 22nd, 2015 09:50 AM

No annhig cannot be corrupted.

Hmmmm... that means she is not human.

I better quit while I am behind. :)

PalenQ Jan 22nd, 2015 12:05 PM

Actually Percy annhig is on double secret probation - don't tell her that but one more misstep and she's tomorrow;s breakfast toast!

Percy Jan 22nd, 2015 12:24 PM

Gulp!!!
