1. There were three important ones: Friedrichstraße (by S-Bahn, this si "palace of Tears", Checkpoint Charlie for foreigners, Heinrich-Heine-Straße for West German citizens.

Quokka of course has all right even #2 the way the question was posed but I was thinking of the original organization - The European Coal and Steel Community but the actually predecessor of the EU was indeed the European Economic Community as Quokka rightly says:

#10 well one of the three does involve Chamonix- one other is in mountains too and one in what may be the very flattest part of France - a big swamp really.

Nope not Nottingham -where is annhig?

Digne Railway is narrow-gauge but not run by SNCF but Chemins de fer de Provence -funded I think by the local regional government.

hetismij2 gets all five correct - I meant to phrase the Q western Europe's tallest buildings as 10 of the top 11 highest buildings are in Moscow or Istanbul- #2 in western Europe is Manhattan on the Mainz' Commerze(sp?) Tower- tallest is London's Shard.

Cross Rail is the official name I think and yes generally east to west under central London- Heathrow and St Pancras will be served I think.

There are plans for a north-south high-speed link to (no not the much discussed Tramway.

PBS Nova had a great special on Cross Rail and how hard it is at certain spots to squeeze the new line between existing lines, various tunnels and old stations -one was called thru the Thread of the Needle because the area to punch thru was so so congested with these other things.

8 -I'm talking about road bridges in central Paris - between Austerlitz/Gare du Lyon area downstream to the Eiffel Tower.

The bridge was intended once to have a people-mover on it to whisk folks between the Gare du Lyon and Austerlitz station but that is just a footpath now -still quicker going between the two it seems than the metro.

For Crossrail: Farringdon in the City, not St Pancras.
