Euro Road Trip Must See's
I will be travelling from Brussels in a round-a-bout way for a destination of Madrid. Thinking of going south through Brussels to Luxembourg. Through Switzerland and then south France to Spain. Any suggestions of places not to miss? I don't mind the drives (love to be behind the wheel).

Well, that really does seem round-about - - but if you have enough time - -

Trier

Baden-Baden or Oberkirch or both

Luzern or Weggis

Altdorf (not really worth an overnight - - lunch stop)

Lake Como area (Menaggio is where you will first hit the lake, but Bellagio is the jewel)

Monte Carlo or Antibes or countless other choices.

the Corniche de l'Esterel (small detour from Cannes west to Frejusr, St. Raphael)

Aigues Mortes (quick stop at best, perhaps)

Montpellier or Sete

Andorra - - but only because it's a cool drive up and over to get to...

Seu d'Urgell

from here, I can't cite any places from my personal experience.

When are you thinking to do this?

Great plan, if you allow enough time.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hi

Think about Route Napoleon across the alps to Cote d'Azur.
It is spectacular, but takes a day.

Visit Aigues Mortes (just off A9 near Nimes). It is a walled city that was once the port where many of the crusades departed.

Equally Pont du Gard and Nimes have extensive Roman remains.

Montpellier is a good stop.

My homepage has info on the the South of France part -

tlp.netfirms.com

Take the coastal road over the Pyrenees for the driving and the views.

In Spain, Dali museum at Figueras, Dali house at Port Legat, Medieval Girona, and Roman remains at Empuria Brava are all close to your route and the French border.

Peter
Wow!! What you described as an itinerary could fill a book of recommended "must sees" and places to stay. I won't add to the already growing number of specific recommendations because they are endless and they are all probably good. I would only observe that when driving in Europe, as I almost always do, I am drawn to the smaller charming villages rather than the big cities, for 2 reasons: (1) they are simply easier to drive into and out of; (2) most important, it's a chance to get just a bit closer to the natives when you aren't part of a tourist mob. And to add to that, so many of the small villages have wonderful sights to see; and their ambience eclipses all of the so-called "atmosphere" of the larger cities. Please don't get me wrong; I like to see and experience the things only large cities can offer; but with the flexibility of a car, I can go anywhere I want, any time I want, and can stop and explore anything that strikes my fancy. With a little studying of your road map ahead of time, you can develop an itinerary for yourself that catches many of these little places. If you come across a place that hasn't been recommended by someone or featured in a guidebook before, so much the better. You have now "discovered" it yourself. There are lots os such places in Europe. Plan your trip carefully and you'll certainly love it.
