Euro-rail Train Fare
It seems to me that the train fare in Germany is rather expensive. The price from Munich to Berlin is listed as DM 249,000. Is this price accurate? it even stated as 'super saver ticket'!

mast

Fodors

Looks like a slipped decimal point to me. The January issue of the Thomas Cook European Timetable shows Munich to Berlin second class one way as 183 US dollars. So return might be 366 dollars, or less. To this you add a supplement of 6 dollars for a seat on an InterCity train, 20 for a seat on an InterCity Express train, 18 dollars for a berth in a 6-berth couchette compartment, and 60 dollars for a berth in a 3-berth sleeper compartment

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, London

Hi Mast,
you are perfectly correct, the price is 249 DM for the ICE, 2nd class without reservation. There`s a cheaper option for the IC, 190 DM, but that train will need one our more for the distance-7,5 hours...That`s the reason why I always choose to fly longer distances within Germany, it`s expensive and eats up your day.

Kind regards

Miriam

I didn't really realised that the train fare can be so expensive, can we get a discounted fare if we book earlier?
Am I right to say that it is much more economical for a family of three to drive from Munich to Berlin rather than to take train? The travel time seems like is the same. (6-7 hrs)

regards,
mast

Hi Mast,
yes I think it would be cheaper to travel by car. You won`t get reduced prices when you book earlier. But there are reduced fares on the weekend, but you need to take special trains and those aren`t the fastest...But why do you want to rush between Munich and Berlin? I would advise to rent a car and plan 2-3 stops in between. For example Coburg or Bayreuth in Bavaria, or Wuerzburg or Bamberg or.. If you have the time I would consider that possibility.

Kind regards

Miriam
