Euro Quiz # 88 - All About Guidebooks & Maps!

1- Hailed as the oldest guidebooks around for Europe, these guidebooks started as far back as 1827 in Germany and still going - name what the series of guides is named?

2- ???????? ?????? is the national mapping agency for Great Britain and is one of the world's largest producers of maps. Since 1 April 2015 it has operated as ??????? ????? Ltd, a government-owned company.
The agency's name indicates its original military purpose: mapping Scotland in the wake of the Jacobite rebellion in 1745. There was also a more general and nationwide need in light of the potential threat of invasion during the Napoleonic Wars, reflected in the inclusion of the War Department's broad arrow in the agency's logo.

What is the name of these maps, the most detailed ones one can get in the U.K. IME.

3- The ????? ????? is a collection of guidebooks founded in France in 1973 by Michel Duval and Philippe Gloaguen as a French take-off on the American "Hitch-Hikers Guide to Europe." These guides, numbering 135 in 2012, are published since 1975 with Hachette Livre .

What is the French backpackers guide series called?

4- ???????? maps are the French equivalent of the UK's Ordnance Survey maps. ????? offer more than 2,000 topographic maps of France at a variety of scales. ????? is a entity of the French government.
What is the name of these maps - and what institution produces them?

5- One of the grandaddy's of American European guides, this series was started in the 1930s by a guy who was also a CIA agent - name the series of guidebooks and the guy who started them?

6- Started in the early 1970s by an Australian couple for folks traveling on a starvation budget, ??????? guides is now the largest travel guide book publisher in the world. The company is owned by American billionaire Brad Kelley's NC2 Media, which bought it in 2013 from BBC Worldwide. Name this series of guides?

7- ????????? is a travel guidebook series founded by ????????? in 1957 and started with the guide entitled ?????????????- the guide is iconic in the sense that older travelers may well have used this book meant to keep expenses at a minimum - I still have my original one from the early 70s on my book shelf. What was the original name of the original iconic European guide and who was the author - what are the guidebooks collectively called now?

8- ????????????? is the name of a guy, a former piano teacher, who wrote this book's first edition back in 1979 - now ????????? has gone onto huge fame in the European travel circles - hosting a PBS European travel show. Name the original guidebook and the author.

9- The first ???????? guide was a 25-page mimeographed pamphlet put together by an 18-year-old Harvard freshman and handed out on student charter flights to Europe; the first professionally published guide was issued in 1961. Still published by Harvard Student Agencies and compiled by Harvard students - what is the name of this iconic low-budget student/youth-oriented travel guide?

10 - In 1900 the tire manufacturers ???????? brothers published the first edition of a guide for French motorists. At the time there were fewer than 3,000 cars in France, and the ???????? guide was intended to boost the demand for cars, and thus for car tires. Their first edition was given away free of charge, and contained useful information for motorists, including maps, instructions for repairing and changing tires, and lists of car mechanics, hotels and petrol stations. Now known for its red and green guides and maps - what is the name of the guidebooks and what is the ubiquitous symbol on the coverage of each guide and maps - .the fat figure - the ??????? Man, whose French name is ????????. (I still have some old green guides with the ??????? Man smoking a cigarette - the cigarette is now gone!)

Merci au revoir1
