Euro quiz # 77 (Mon 3/16)... Pose Your Own Questions

Like last week this is a partcipatory quiz - pose one or two questions of your own - I'll start:

1 -Of EU nations list the three with the lowest highest elevations - in order. (Monaco, Vatican, etc don't qualify - proper countries in the EU and UN).

2- ??? Pose your questions!!!

2. How is called the highest situated mountain hotel (NOT hut!) in the Alps, in which country and in which part of this country does it be?

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 06:54 AM

1. Denmark, Netherlands, Estonia?

bilboburgler Mar 16th, 2015 06:56 AM

Lets try Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark.

The trouble will be about measuring sea level to get this right, I understand the Swiss use the Med and the Germans use the Baltic which lead to at least one bridge being out by 300mm..

bilboburgler Mar 16th, 2015 06:57 AM

3) Highest EU country then?

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 06:59 AM

1- first two are correct and in order - another country is in third.

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 07:03 AM

3 - France - Mont Blanc (or does it straddle the border with Switzerland?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...pean_countries

after looking I was half right for # 3

bilboburgler Mar 16th, 2015 07:20 AM

.... to clarify, highest on average, not just some sticky up bit :-) and Andora is not in EU.

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 09:30 AM

3. Spain?

4. What are those ladderlike contraptions fixed to the bathroom walls of most European apartment rentals? A serious of parallel rods, usually white or stainless steel.

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 09:32 AM

series, I mean!

flpab Mar 16th, 2015 09:35 AM

Tom, towel warmers. Great for drying out your socks overnight.

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 09:42 AM

flpab: Yes, I had to ask what they were, but forgot to ask how to turn it on. Seems frivolous when the kitchen sinks never have disposers.

Dukey1 Mar 16th, 2015 09:42 AM

Radiators!!!!

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 09:47 AM

I too would hazard that Spain is the highest elevation on a whole - a big plateau but not sure - Switzerland would be the logical guess but much of that country is rather low.

5. when the new London Bridge replaced an older London Bridge a few decades or so ago what happened to the old London Bridge that was falling down? Where is it now?

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 09:53 AM

5. Too easy, leaving that one.

6. What European airline announced today that they will start flying transatlantic flights in 2020 from/to up to 14 cities on each continent?

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 10:00 AM

6. Ryan Air is my guess and only a guess.

hetismij2 Mar 16th, 2015 10:02 AM

Austria has the highest mean elevation I think.

London Bridge is in Lake Havasu, Arizona, having been sold.
It isn't true that the buyer thought he was getting Tower Bridge.

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 10:10 AM

3. Peeked, Spain is 4th right after Albania.

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 10:18 AM

6. Yes, Ryanair, will they come thru with the 10 pound one ways they promised (plus tax)?

hetismij2 Mar 16th, 2015 10:41 AM

Ryanair announced that last year.
I would rather stay in Europe than contemplate flying the Atlantic with O'Leary's torture machine.

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 10:44 AM

7. excluding Iceland and Russia what European capital cities have a- the northernmost capital city and the southernmost and westernmost ones. I had to look up the northernmost to be sure!

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 10:45 AM

will there be pay toilets on the trans-Atlantic European flights?

tom_mn Mar 16th, 2015 11:11 AM

7. Finland, Malta, Portugal.

pariswat Mar 16th, 2015 11:37 AM

Third highest lowest elevation would be Belgium ?

No pay toilets ! I've already decide to wear bermuda swimsuits and 'forget' myself on my seat if it ever becomes pay toilets...

PalenQ Mar 16th, 2015 12:57 PM

Third highest lowest elevation would be Belgium ?- nope the Ardennes are small mountains. One of the smallest EU countries and I think one of the most densely populated.

Percy Mar 16th, 2015 01:17 PM

Yep been to Lake Haversu City many time and walk and drive across the London Bridge.

See what money can buy !! :)

2. How is called the highest situated mountain hotel (NOT hut!) in the Alps, in which country and in which part of this country does it be?>

Still looking for this - I'll take a stab - it's on the Bernina Pass - at Bernina Ospiz (or Alpe Grumn?), Switzerland - Hotel Bernina? All a guess but few hotels higher than this one I think.

Cowboy1968 Mar 16th, 2015 02:37 PM

1. Third lowest elevation.. maybe Malta?

bilboburgler Mar 16th, 2015 11:45 PM

Albania is not in the EU.

hetismij2 Mar 17th, 2015 03:07 AM

I still think Austria has the highest mean elevation within the EU, as I said upthread.
It has mountains and no coast to lower the elevation so much.

bilboburgler Mar 17th, 2015 04:46 AM

hetismij you are right.

PalenQ Mar 17th, 2015 05:15 AM

1- Malta is the third lowest in highest elevation.

neckervd Mar 17th, 2015 07:04 AM

2. How is called the highest situated mountain hotel (NOT hut!) in the Alps, in which country and in which part of this country does it be?>

In order to help you: it's NOT in Switzerland (Gornergrat, the highest Swiss hotel is at 3090m/10140ft only), the one that I mean is at 3212 metres/10540ft.

PalenQ Mar 18th, 2015 01:39 PM

Ok neckervd - what is the highest hotel - seems no one knows!?
