Euro Quiz # 73 - (Thursday) Pose Your Questions!

Trying a new bent today in making a quiz that is participatory - most folks who are not blockaded in their houses by mountains of snow (quickly melting however) don't have time to create a whole quiz - which does take time to verify facts, etc. so I thought today I'd try to start by asking one question and then have anyone who would ask another question or two - until we get the usual ten questions.

we'll see how it works:

I'll start:

1- What is the capital of Liechtenstein? Where is Lichtenstein located - between which two countries?

Who's next? Pleeeeeze!

2- ???????????

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 07:09 AM

1. Vaduz? something like that, between Austria and Switzerland

2. What is the official currency of Liechtenstein?

annhig Mar 12th, 2015 07:14 AM

too easy - tom-mn got it already.

Don't know the currency off the top of my head but I'll make a stab at the swiss franc.

I'll try and think of one to pass on.

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 07:18 AM

annhig: you are correct. I was a little surprised to find that out because I knew that Liechtenstein supported Hitler so I thought would be more closely allied with Austria. As a result the prince lost his royal estate in Bohemia after the war.

What is the price of bus trips in Liechtenstein?

annhig Mar 12th, 2015 07:30 AM

tom_mn - i was guessing but sort of drawing on going there an extremely long time ago, when it seemed closer to Switzerland than Austria. Also it's not in the EU so it was unlikely to have joined the eurozone.

Here's no 2:

what is the link between a well known UK department store and 2 islands with the same name that are both cut off at high tide, and where will I find them?

What is the price of bus trips in Liechtenstein?> Free - because of the money laundering for rich Germans, including politicians, the gov't coffers are overslowing?

"what is the link between a well known UK department store and 2 islands with the same name that are both cut off at high tide, and where will I find them"

St Michael's Mount (Normandy and Cornwall)
St Michael - on bras and knickers up and down the land (Marks and Spencer)????????

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 07:55 AM

Following on from annhig: Name the 5 European countries not in the EU that use the euro for their currency?

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 07:57 AM

Actually looks like there are 6.

Cowboy1968 Mar 12th, 2015 08:00 AM

Six indeed.
Vatican, San Marino, Monaco, Andorra, Kosovo, Montenegro.

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 08:06 AM

Cowboy is right, I thought from the map is was Macedonia, but a web search says Kosovo is the sixth.

I'd ask for 5 countries (not former or current US territories) using the US$ but it is not really on topic. The Asian one is interesting, though.

PalenQ Mar 12th, 2015 08:11 AM

Is it the Phillipines that uses the American greenback? But guess not as Phillipines was a U S colony - Panama would be one I think though not Asian.

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 08:22 AM

Hint: Asian (SMALL) country gained independence in 1999.

bilboburgler Mar 12th, 2015 08:47 AM

P you are right.

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 08:59 AM

5. Name the palace just west of Paris that burned in the Franco-Prussian war. It was Napoleon's preferred residence. It is now the site of a large park and garden. Part of the original palace was moved to Bulgaria and incorporated into a royal building there.

flanneruk Mar 12th, 2015 09:13 AM

"gained independence in 1999."

Would that be East Timor?

tom_mn Mar 12th, 2015 09:17 AM

flanner is correct, one would think the Aussie dollar would make more sense for them.

flanneruk Mar 12th, 2015 09:20 AM

"one would think the Aussie dollar would make more sense for them."

I think that would be rubbing the Indonesians' nose in it.

6. When you leave this European airport you find two official taxi ranks with taxis from two different countries waiting next to eachother. Where is this airport and from which two countries are the taxis?
Hint: Switzerland has nothing to do with it.
