Euro Jobs for US Student?

Hi. I am a US student who will be taking two classes in Rome for the month of June. After that month, I would really like to spend as much time as possible in Europe before school starts up in mid-August. Pretty much, all I need a job to cover is room and board, a little spending money, and I'd like to have enough flexibility to be able to explore the local where I'll be staying (ie, not working 7 days a week). I have a lot of experience in childcare, and will be one credit short of receiving a Teaching English as a Second Language endorsement from my university by the time I reach Rome. Do you have any suggestions where and how to find work? I'm pretty much open to any interesting place that I can get cheap enough transportation to from Rome. I've tried searching on line, but I either find dead ends or a request for a 600 dollar "placement fee". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the insight!!

I would contact the school you will be taking courses at. It seems likely others want to do the same and they might have info. (But -be prepared that this might be illegal - not sure of student short-term rules) and your only option might be illegal under the table (ie dishwasher - or bus boy etc).

One possibility would be a job in Youth Programs at Aviano AB, which is not far from Venice. There are usually temporary positions available for the summer camp program, looking after school age children during their summer break. You would need to contact them early, though, even before you leave the US for your June course. There may be positions open for local hire, or you could check out this internship program: http://tinyurl.com/t8nkk. I don't know how old that website is, so it may be out of date.

Hi Flower - You might find something - or you could advertise - in the classifieds in the English language mag 'Wanted in Rome'

http://www.wantedinrome.com/

If you speak Italian, check out 'Porta Portese.'

Hope this helps ...

But the first thing is to check if your visa allows you to get a paid work.

Norween, you hit the nail on the head - that's why I suggested Aviano AB - even dependents of US military personnel aren't allowed to work off-base in Italy unless they are EU citizens, so I doubt littleflower's visa would permit it. US citizens can apply for jobs on American bases, though, and even get duty free shopping as part of the deal.
