Is it cheaper to buy a Eurail pass online before your trip or in Europe?

I'm not exactly sure of the exact amount of countries I want to visit, but will be when I'm in Europe in a month so would it be better idea for me to guess how many countries I want now & buy the eurail pass online or just wait until I get to Europe to purchase?

About 20 years ago a eurail pass was the way to go. These days it may cost you far more money and time to use a eurail pass compared to point to point train tickets, low cost flights, and regional train passes.

You can no longer simply hop on any train carrying a eurail pass. Many trains in Europe require a seat reservation, which can cost you 15 euros or more.

The best thing to do is to do a little more homework about possible itineraries, check out cheap flights for long distances, and point to point/regional passes to get a feel for prices.

I think you have to buy eurail passes before you go to Europe. We used regular tickets for some of our travel but a eurail pass for some of it. I'd suggest you call Budge Europe Travel Service's European Planning and Rail Guide. 1-800-441-9413 or 1-800-441-2387.

The people there were very helpful.

You need to buy your Eurail pass in the States before you leave. I have used Eurail passes for Germany and Switzland; in my experience it has always been cheaper to use the passes than buy point to point. The more days you choose to travel on your pass, the cheaper it gets for each trip.
