Estimated travel time from Glasgow to Mallaig for the ferry

We are arriving Prestwick airport on June 23rd at 10:20 am and picking up our rental car there. I have read various driving time estimates from Glasgow to Mallaig depending on time of day (and I understand an accident could cause delays) but has anyone made this trip at this time? Five hours seems to be the average according to various sources. I want to book the ferry in advance and it does not appear the 3:20 pm ferry would be wise, the next scheduled departure is 4:40 pm and the last departure is 6 pm.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Prestwick isn't in Glasgow, it is a fair distance SW of the city. From Prestwick to mallaig count on 4.5 hours on a good day - and if you are already used to driving in the UK/on the left. 5 hours is certainly possible. But it could be longer.

One question - are you flying in long haul? That is a very long journey w/ any sort of jet lag.

Thanks janisj. We are starting our holiday in Dublin for a few days before attempting to drive (thus the Dublin to Prestwick on lovely Ryanair - not our first time so we know what to expect on that airline).

Mr. Wilde is an experienced UK driver so no worries there.

I am following other advice given that when travelling to the Isle of Skye one should take the ferry one way and come back round by way of the bridge. Do you feel it wiser to do the ferry going over or coming back?

Thank you for your comments.

Honestly makes no difference. As long as you go one way and return the other alls good.

If the timing of the ferry is an issue, I would take it on the way back when you have more control over where you will be at what time.
