Escorted Tour to Pompeii from Rome in December

Hi all - my trip is fast approaching and I cant find any escorted tour from Rome to Pompeii as a day trip. Most web sites I have tried don't run the tours in the winter months. I know we can take the train to Naples and do this on our own, but its our vacation and I dont want to stress myself out worrying about missing trains and connections. We are 4 - 2 adults, 2 kids.

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks!!!

I don't know if you are willing to pay the cost of a private tour, but while researching visits to Pompeii with chidren, I came across this website for a guide who does daytrips from: http://www.romekidstours.com/ I have no personal experience with her, perhaps others do. Good luck!

If you want to pay about $125 per person and spend precious time visiting a cameo making factory in order not to stress, then a tour might be right for you.

With 4 people I would rent a car for the day and pick up a guide on the spot. Just realize that you will have to leave Rome VERY early - since it gets dark so early that time of year. (Or train is fine too - don;t know why you would think it complicated.)

I planned an Italy trip for 2 friends, which they went on last month. I arranged for Franco Marrapese to pick them up at the Naples airport and take them to Sorrento on their day of arrival and on another day to take them on an all-day excursion along the Amalfi coast. They enjoyed both so much they arranged another private tour with his company for an excursion to Pompeii. They called me from Italy to tell how much they loved the tours and Mr. Marrapese.

You might contact him to see what he could offer.

Ok, I think I am convinced to take the train to Naples and hire a guide once I get there. I dont want to visit a cameo factory - blah, blah, blah!!!
Any other advice??

I wouldn't be too concerned about missing trains and connections: there are frequent trains between Rome and Naples, and switching to the Circumvesuviana at Naples termini is straightforward. Since it's a commuter train, there are frequent trains on this line as well.

There is definitely a lot of good advice on the forum about seeing Pompeii - I know that zeppole has posted some fairly recently.

If you haven't seen it, this is GAC's post on a daytrip to Pompeii from Rome: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...n-a-budget.cfm

And A_Brit_In_Ischia posted a great walkthrough of Naples termini: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...-or-pompei.cfm

Have fun!
