Erzgebirge day trip rec for a December Sunday?

Planning a day trip to the Erzgebirge on a Sunday in December (Saturday will be spent in Herrnhut). What's your rec for the best town/village for Sunday sightseeing? Would like to stroll around, see some snow (if there is any to be seen), stop for a hot chocolate or cappuccino and pastry (not a gluhwein fan), maybe a little shopping in the Christmas market. Won't have a car - so need someplace reachable by train/bus.
Thanks!

Yep, definitely Freiberg (my guess is you'll be based in Dresden, right?)

Here's another, similar page on Freiberg:

;-)

Annaberg is another option, a bit longer by train but easily doable and better chances for snow. Info here:

I haven't been to Feiburg, but Annaberg is certainly worth a stop. A wonderful little town and a very interesting Christmas market. It was snowing when I was there 1st Advent weekend last year.

Attention, FreiBURG is a different place 8 hours away...

Annaberg is just as worthwhile as Freiberg, so that decision is a win-win situation. From Dresden Freiberg is closer and easy to reach by direct trains, though. And Freiberg has the best café (Hartmann in Obermarkt).

Thank you - I may try to head out early to Annaberg, wander around for two hours, then go to Freiberg, walk around, stop at Hartmann, then go home. What is the best stop for Annaberg from Dresden: Annaberg-Bucholz (sp) Sud? Mitte? Or do I have the wrong Anneberg?

I doubt this is a good plan. Too much. Better concentrate on one of them (at least I would, but it's your day trip, of course).

Annaberg-Buchholz Mitte is the central stop for the trains.

Ingo allow me to correct... Annaberg-Buchholz Unterer Bahnhof is the stop for Annaberg's old town - the first stop when coming from Chemnitz. Mitte is the stop for Buchholz.

But I agree that squeezing both into one day is too much. Pick one. Each of them has enough to do to fill more than one day.
So here is my Annaberg page, too, although it is based on a visit in September and there is nothing about the Christmas market in it: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/131d1/

Thank you for your suggestions. I will wait and see what I feel like doing on the day.

I can't believe I've been in Dresden almost four weeks and haven't seen a SINGLE snowflake!! However, there was snow in Herrnhut when I was there a week ago Saturday.
Because of the lack of snow, I put off the trip to Annaberg and am now thinking of going on the 22nd. www.wetter.de has snow in the forecast for that day. Will things in Annaberg be open?
Having a great time in Dresden despite the uncooperative and unfestive weather.

It's not snowing in Dresden right now? It does only a half hour away in the hills east of Dresden. The Erzgebirge got some snow also on Friday and it would have been a good idea to go there today ... Miners' parade in Annaberg today!

Unfortunately the Christmas market in Annaberg closes today after the parade. Other things will be open (museums, churches and shops)

I would be careful travelling on 22nd. According to the forecast the mountains might get a good dump of snow that day. This might cause disruptions with transportation (though not so much for trains, more on roads)

Hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Dresden, too!

I.

Nope, just rain. Rain, rain, rain. Oh well, today is one of my planned museum days, so the weather doesn't matter, but really, not one snowflake so far in Dresden this December. Hmmmph. (OTOH, DH says it's snowing back home in Switzerland...)

The snow dump on Annaberg sounds perfect, esp as I'm going by train. I'm ok with missing the Christmas market, I'd rather explore the town, shops and cafes anyway.

Thank you for the always-helpful advice!

In Annaberg, I would recommend St Annen's church up the hill. It is so interesting, particularly if you know what you are seeing. It would be nice if you could get a guide from the tourist office to show you around. Have a good excursion. I am jealous. CJ

According to the town's website: http://www.annaberg-buchholz.de/haup...nav_f_engl.htm the Christmas market in Annaberg stays open until Dec 23.

St Annen church is a must. In addition to that I highly recommend Manufaktur der Träume (if you have enough time, you'll need and want at least two hours in there). Also, don't miss the Miners Nativity in Bergkirche, the small church off market square.

Hm, indeed, quokka is right. The print media that I used obviously got the date wrong. Apologies.
