Ephesus to Cappadocia
 

We're taking ferry from Rhodes to Marmaris and from then, plan to head to Ephesus and then to Cappadocia. Would like to make loop in 2 days/1 night before returning to Rhodes. Is this feasible? How would you recommend traveling around in Turkey? Are trains reliable? Thanks!

A lot of people traveling in Turkey use the bus as they are better than the trains, however, if you are pressed for time, I heartily recommend flying. It is cheap and fast. Be sure to identify your luggage as you board the plane. All luggage is on display and you indicate to the airline employee which bags are yours and then they load them. I was paged after I got on the plane because I did not know you had to do this. At least that was how it was done 8 years ago. We used a local travel agent in Ephesus who also arranged for us to take a guided tour of Cappadocia with a local who grew up there and lived in the caves as a child. Truly a memorable vacation.

Unless I've misunderstood you, Poppy, I don't see how you could do that trip in 2 days / 1 night. Unless it's a private plane, I think you'd have to go to the airport in Izmir (about 1 hour from Ephesus, I think), then fly to Istanbul, then get another flight onto Kayseri in Cappodocia. It would end up taking you several hours to get there. And then you'd have to do that the next day to go back. But maybe I've misunderstood?

SusanInToronto is correct. I'm assuming you are doing a "whirlwind" visit as you will spend a fair number of hours traveling to get to Cappadocia. Turkey is bigger than it looks!!

Thanks Susan & Linda - I did not know if this was a feasible plan or not. The main focus of our trip is Greece, and Turkey certainly deserves more than a "pit stop" (I'm looking forward to a separate trip there someday), but I wanted to take advantage of our close proximity to at least see something in Turkey...so now, I will just have to go read all of the Ephesus vs. Cappadocia threads and decide WHICH one we want to do since we have limited time in Turkey. Thanks!

They are really two entirely different areas. If pressed for time, I would stay at Ephesus and see the Roman ruins and enjoy the coastal area. If you don't mind being on the go and know that you are just taking a quick look at Cappadocia then you can do that. It really all depends on your travel philosophy.

I had travels in Greece when people said impossible. Its the matter of nerves & money and good planning.
Depending on how early your ferrry arrives, you can concentrate on Ephesus only than drive to izmir airport ( 45 min ) to catch the plane to istanbul and catch connection to Kayseri Airport. You are than in Cappadocia with 1 hour drive. Overnight in Cappadocia, Tour in the morning and back to izmir via istanbul next evening. Its concerned extra travelling and matching timing but possible.
