Ephesus from Rhodes?
we are going to Rhodes for one week in October, I have been reading the postings and Ephesus sounds like the place to visit. Is it possible from Rhodes or just Crete? thanks
|
From Rhodes you can get a ferry over to Bodrum or Marmaris in Turkey, then you can make your way north to Ephesus either by flying to Izmir and taking a bus south to Selcuk, or by taking a bus from Bodrum or Marmaris all the way to Selcuk. I suppose it's also possible to get a ferry from Bodrum or Marmaris to Kusadasi then a bus to Selcuk, but it would take quite a while. Ephesus is definitely worth the effort, it's one of the most amazing archaeological sites in all the Med.

Dollie -
Be aware that there is a VISA entry fee into Turkey of $100 - so I would make sure you either have the VISA beforehand, or that your port of entry in Turkey can issue them. |
thanks for replying, I didn't realize it was so far and I didn't know about the visa entry fee. I was hoping for a day trip to Turkey, I'm willing to pay an entry fee but not $200 for just an afternoon jaunt. I will have to wait until next trip to visit Ephesus. We will need to do a trip just focusing on Greece and Turkey. The week we are spending in Rhodes is our last week over and it is meant for resting up before returning to the US. thank you again, dollie

You can, however, take a day trip from Rhodes to Bodrum (worth it to see the castle!) without paying the visa fee. I'm not sure what the process is, but I know it's done all the time, a common practice.

How could there possibly not be a visa requirement to visit Bodrum since it is part of Turkey. This would be applicable to anywhere within the country. Could anyone elaborate on this , please?
Thanks. ross. :-) |
I'm not sure how it's done, but maybe they keep your passport while you're out exploring for the day.

There is a visa fee of 100 Usd. for enetering Turkey. Altough I am not sure of day visits (unlikely )
I have checked the web site of the ministery of tourism but not found day entry visa fee. so its 100 Usd per person .... But its worthwhile the money if you stay little longer ;-) |
This isn't going to clear up the confusion here, just add to it but this is my experience..... On a cruise through the Greek Isles this past April, the cruise ship (Triton - Royal Olympic line) stopped in Kusadasi and for only around 60 euro you could take a escorted shore excursion to Ephesus. I would think that if a $100 VISA fee were required, then the excursion would have cost much more.

All I know is when I was staying in Bodrum I noticed that there was a regularly scheduled boat that left every morning for Rhodes, and there was a different price for a day trip than there was for normal passage. How this works I never found out, and whether or not it works in reverse from Rhodes to Bodrum I can only speculate.
