English Newspapers or Internet Cafes - Will I find them?

I'll be travelling in France, Switzerland & Germany for 3 weeks. How likely is it to find english language newspapers in cities like Paris, Vevey, Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen, Garmisch & Munich?

I'm a news & sports junkie so I'd love to find out how my stocks & sports teams are doing.

The other option is to find time at an Internet cafe. I'm an early riser so it's likely my available time would be from 6:30-8am. Would anything be open then in the towns I'm going to?

I think you may end up having to ask around a bit locally, but I think you’ll have little trouble finding an Internet café. I was in Paris recently and stayed with a French family. Emailing home was a real drag as their keyboards were very different than in the States and, of course, spell check was from another world.
As far as English newspapers that shouldn’t be a problem. I noticed several at each newsstand I passed by.
Of course, a great tool for your tastes would be a laptop. You could instantly solve all your problems and maybe have a tax deduction to boot.
Bill,

You will find the International Herald Tribune (IHT) at almost every newsstand in Europe. It's jointly published by the NY Times and Washington Post. USA Today also has an international edition which is widely available. There's also the Wall Street Journal Europe, Financial Times...

Regarding internet access, just ask your hotel for the nearest internet cafe if they don't have a PC for you to use.

Andre

Hello Bill,

The International Herald Tribune is an English-language paper printed in Paris & Zurich (and some other places too, I believe). Most 4/5 star hotels will have a copy or two on hand, but if they don't, the IHT is readily available all over. Just ask at the desk where you can buy one.

s

Sorry Andre --

Didn't mean to step on your post!

s

You'll have no problem with the newspapers, actually USA Today is more readily available than the Herald Tribune these days but that is good for you as they have much more extensive sports coverage and proably more indepth financial reporting. There are internet cafes just everywhere, the tiniest little out of the way places with an internet cafe...I just shake my head in awe!

Thanks all for your speedy responses - this will be a nice diversion for me while the family sleeps.

Just like weighing yourself too often, looking at the stock prices more than once a week leads to alarm and despondency :) But as everyone says, if you want to, you will have no problem finding out.

I'm actually a lot more interested in my sports teams and reading about the World Cup than stocks. I wouldn't mind staying current on world news as well.

Look up, via the web, internet cafes in Paris and probably other cities. I don't know the website but found it this way. There are lots around Paris and they give opening times. Oft times, your hotel will have access. I doubt there's a city you can't find one.

Bill: If your hotels don't have IHT or any other newspaper in English, best is to check with the newsstands at the train station, especially in the places you will stay in Switzerland.
Now, the Internet cafes usually don't open until 9 or 10 am, but also stay open late (till 10 pm or so). As said above, more and more hotels have internet access for their guests, usually it's paying, but not that expensive.
Have fun!
