Polite comment: Language experts note that much communication is accomplished with body gestures. Some accounts allow up to 75%! Some days I can get by without a word of English or Polish; other days I need a friendly translator. Some European schools are now teaching English beginning at the first grade. Other parents are hiring tutors to teach very young children. Fear not, you will get by!

Starting communication with "Pardonnez-moi, (madam, monsieur) [pause]..."
is a good behavior.
Add to that the fact that you can turn just about any statement into a question by inflection (making your voice go up at the end) makes things easier.
eg. "C'est le tour eiffel?"

I should have added "in France". but I think the same thing works anywhere.
