Ahh, yes, the "smart" player. In the US, this is usually code for "white". What is it code for in Europe?>>>>

And those English soccer 'fans' who once famously chanted en masse "I'd rather be a Paki than a Turk" - that's English soccer in a nutshell

Why don't you just bugger off you tiresome fool.

"You want a tournament? You want tension? You want to see teams leave it all on the floor/field? NOTHING beats March Madness. The World Cup is designed to ensure the favorites advance, and is boring as a result."

Just looked up March Madness. The teams are seeded, exactly as in tennis tournaments. Meant to ensure that the favourites meet only in the final stages of the tournament if they win their games.

It's exactly the same in the world cup, only that a group stage is added to allow the weak teams at least three games before they go home again.

I've had less annoying warts.

Josser Dec 17th, 2009 04:52 AM

Try dabbing the wart with paint.

On a more serious note, I know somebody who was in the US when they (the dear knows why) staged the World Cup.
He said that if you wanted to see it properly, you had to watch a Latino channel.

Hans Dec 17th, 2009 05:27 AM

The only channels not preferring to show the OJ chase instead ...

Palenque Dec 17th, 2009 06:36 AM

dream on!

<<>caroline...do you seriously think that italians eg wil not be watching games during a world cup?<

They may very well be but not in decent Scottish Italian restaurants during service. I cant think of an Italian restaurant in Glasgow or Edinburgh that isn't a chippy that even has a telly.>>

I made that mistake during Euro something or other - I went to my favourite little Italian restaurant that I knew would be quiet because the pubs would be full of people watching soccer.

Just as I started eating a member of staff struggled through the door with a TV, just for the night.

alihutch Dec 18th, 2009 01:54 AM

Aye, they do actually...

"I made that mistake during Euro something or other -"

I had an identical experience - small Italian run and staffed restaurant that we often visited, but this was the night of a semi final - the only time you could get service was during injury breaks and half time.

I didn't mind - it was part of the charm of the place.

caroline_edinburgh Dec 18th, 2009 05:42 AM

Like whoever it was said, not in *decent* Scottish Italian restaurants :-)

Cholmondley_Warner Dec 18th, 2009 06:18 AM

The only decent italian restaurants in Scotchland are in Largs and sell ice cream:

http://www.scotland.org.uk/food/nardini_250101.htm

Now I'm looking forward to people trying to explain to yanks why they should go to Largs.

wellididntknowthat Dec 18th, 2009 07:32 AM

>Now I'm looking forward to people trying to explain to yanks why they should go to Largs.<

So you can go to Millport obviously!

WIDKT now has a craving for ice cream. Nardini's is about an hours drive. It's almost worth risking the black ice.

alihutch Dec 18th, 2009 07:33 AM

cos then they can go to Millport!!

wellididntknowthat Dec 18th, 2009 07:36 AM

And cycle around Cumbrae on old bikes. In the rain.

Cholmondley_Warner Dec 18th, 2009 10:42 AM

I now have visions of coachloads of yank tourists in tartan trousers wandering around Largs wondering what the hell has happened.

wellididntknowthat Dec 18th, 2009 04:33 PM

Feck Em! As long as they buy large portions of fish and chips (note to our southern friends, good fish and chips isn't a choice, its just bloody fresh fat haddock) and supplement it with Irn Bru. After that wear appropraite rainwear and piss off to somewhere they'll put up with your whining!

WIDKT- possibly not a Scottish Tourist Boeard Rep

Cholmondley_Warner Dec 19th, 2009 03:07 AM

Largs is the new Cote D'Azure.

Cote de Merde?

wellididntknowthat Dec 19th, 2009 01:00 PM

>Cote de Merde?<

When the wind over the sewage treatment works is blowing inthe right direction then defnitely.
