I'm sure you know this - but Northern Ireland is a completely different country than Ireland.

To be accurate the whole island is Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland uses Euros and signs speed limits in kph.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK. It uses GBP (but local banks also issue their own notes as in Scotland) and signs speed limits in mph.

There are no border controls between the two.

stacy123, I chuckled when you called yourself undertraveled! Likely many on Fodors are a bit overtraveled and can recommend many favorite sites. DW and I are up in years and still travel some. Regarding Ireland, yes something magic there and you can spend time in Dublin itself and then north to Newgrange and south to Wicklow Mnt. and Glendalough. But the real beauty is to the West.

I suppose renting a car would suit you but also consider buses and trains in Europe. The thing is not to take in too much so to allow travel time. Driving winding roads and getting to airports e.g. takes time. Sometimes people talk about plans to see London, Paris, Rome etc. without considering getting there or and getting around once there. But missing London seems a shame and parts of Britain. Speaking of England we stayed in farmhouses much like B&Bs.

You two young women should have fun. And planning the trip is half the fun.
