About six to ten hours average eight.

Have a look at the RAC route planner at http://www.rac.co.uk/plan_route

It will give you times and even plan your route. Personally, I'd not try to do it one go unless it is urgent to get there in one day. Why not stop somewhere nice on the way up, the Lake District perhaps.

Tony is right - IF you are really comfortable driving in the UK and have done it several times -- and know how to spot the speed cameras :-)

But for the average tourist, plan on about 7 hours driving time including a brief stop at a service area.

London to carlisle is about 300+ miles and London to Berwick upon Tweed is approx 350 miles.

But that only gets you to the border - where in Scotland are you heading? Just getting to Scotland probably isn't the end of your journey (unless you are getting hitched at Gretna Green).

Except for the motorway to Glasgow - anywhere else in Scotland will take you a lot more time. Carlisle to Glasgow is about 100 miles of high speed road - anywhere else will take time.

I'd also add it depends on where in London you're starting, and what time of day. Just getting through/around the city can take a long time. Then there's the question of east v. west side of the island - depends on where you want to end up.

Hi

UK has worse traffic than most of Europe.

At a bad time, you can be parked on motorways for quite some time.

Bad times are morning and evening commuter traffic ........ M1, M10, M2, M3, M4, M40, M5, M6, M65, M42, M20 etc.

Also Friday night + Sunday evening are busy.

Peter

not one of the above is in Scotland, though!
