England - April 21 - Does anything happen on Queen's birthday?

Guide book I have mentions some sort of event, but search here speaks to an outdoor celebration in June. Anything worth seeing that happens on her actual birthday in April as we will be in London during that week. Thanks.

No doubt Prince Philip gives her a card.

And her feckless elder son's valet presumably buys a present for him to give her.

Otherwise, of course nothing happens to celebrate the head of state's birthday. We leave that kind of thing to republics.

Trooping the Colour, which takes place on her official birthday, is not a birthday celebration. It's a fake-traditional event which just happens to be on that day.

However, because England doesn't join the world's emotionally insecure societies in having a National Day, but the world's diplomacy industry has a fetish about National Day parties, British diplomatic missions abroad choose the queen's official birthday as the date they reciprocate all those invitations they've received from other embassies during the year.

Thanks (I think?). I imagine this year she will still be recovering from her son's wedding to Camilla, so maybe it will be a low-key celebration.

To be strictly accurate, you may hear the National Anthem being played at the beginning of some early morning BBC radio news bulletins to mark the occasion. But that's as far as it goes. She will most likely be away somewhere celebrating (or recovering from the wedding) privately, not least because we are likely to be in the middle of a General Election, and there will be little or no public state business.

There will be Royal Gun Salute fired on 21 April at Hyde Park (12 nopon) and the Tower of London (1 pm). It also takes place at other capitals of the countries that make up the United Kingdom - Cardiff, Edinburgh Castle and Belfast.
