engadine question

I am considering spending one night of my trip at either the hotel at Diavollezza or at the berghaus at Fuorcla Surlej. Any thoughts on which would provide the more interesting sunset/sunrise views (I'm into photography).

Diavolezza is better for sunset/sunrise. The best choice, however, is Muottas Muragl.

We loved Muottas Muragl. The accomodations were quite mediocre but the food was excellent and the wine list outstanding. Only the views surpassed it! :)

Aren't the views from M.M. pretty much over the main valley? I'd rather have mountain/nature vistas...

SloJan Jul 11th, 2006 10:26 AM

No. MM has incredible mountain vistas, almost 360 degree views. I want to say that you can see right down the valley but I may be confusing it with some other peak. Ingo? Comments?

Hi SloJan! Glad to hear from you. How is it in Slovenia? I am off for Garmisch for a long weekend on Thursday.

It is true that the views from MM are going over the main valley. But of course that includes the surrounding mountains as well. I personally found the sunset particularly great when the lakes turned to special colours.

The problem with Fuorcla Surlej is that the sunrise happens behind the Bernina Massif and it is already full daylight until you get to see the sun. Same problem with sunSET at Diavolezza. You'll only see the uppermost peaks of the mountains glowing in all sorts of red/yellow.

If you want a really perfect sunset/sunrise stay overnight at Georgy hut above Pontresina. Chair lift to Alp Languard, then hike up to the hut (2.5 hours). The hut is only 30 minutes/100 m below the top of Piz Languard, from where you have 360° views (but the views from the hut are spectacular enough). The hut offers very basic acc. though.
