Engadin Switzerland 4 day itinerary

Hello! My husband and I will be staying in Sils Maria (at the Waldhaus) for four nights at the end of June, and we will have a car. One day will be dedicated to the Bernina Express route (maybe just St. Moritz to Tirano), but the other days are open. We mainly like to hike (strenuous is fine, but nothing super long), visit quaint villages and enjoy local food/drink. Not too interested in shopping or museums. Love riding cable cars, but there are so many to choose from! We'll have the Engadin Summer Pass from the Waldhaus. Would very much appreciate any suggestions regarding outdoor activities, favorite towns and also suggestions of restaurants/bars in the area. Thanks so much!

The Waldhaus! Lovely!

We love the Engadine and have been many times.

I highly recommend you get yourselves to Soglio - beautiful. We always use public transport when in Switzerland and the bus ride over the Majoja Pass is a spectacular thrill ride - not sure I'd want to drive it myself. There are some lovely hikes that originate from Soglio:

If you're looking for a beautiful hike, you can't go wrong with the Wasserweg (Water Trail) accessed from the Sils-Segl-Frutschellas cable car.

The trail’s description:

The Water Trail is one of the hiking highlights on Corvatsch. From the Furtschellas middle station (2312 m), the 2½-hour circular walk takes you past six crystal-clear mountain lakes. The trail goes first towards Alp Munt, then branches off to the left and climbs steeply uphill for a short time. Your efforts are soon rewarded when the first of the six lakes comes into view, Leijn Cristal. This is followed by Lejin Magnetit, Lejin Malachit, Lejin Rhodonit, Lejin S-chaglia and finally Lejin Epidot. All the way along this family-friendly walk, you have wonderful views up to the icy pinnacles and rocky crags of the Corvatsch massif.

The views from up there are spectacular!

You might also enjoy the gentle walk from Maloja to Sils alongside the lake:

A few hours in St Moritz is also well worth while, especially if it includes a stop at Hanselmann Conditorei for their Nusstorte, and Läderach for champagne truffles.

Prepare to be wowed.

If you take the regional train on the Bernina line, you can stop off where you like. You don’t need to go as far as Tirano.
Some want to see the Brusio viaduct, we didn’t go that far and alighted at the Miralago stop. So many interesting places to stop for a trail walk, or wander around eg Poschiavo, or Ospizio Bernina (the highest point at the lake, stunning barren scenery, you might want to walk there), you’d probably want to use your pass for Diavolezza, you could stop at Morteratsch to walk the trail and see the staggering retreat of the glacier. . .
Stop in St Moritz for a wander on your return. Then bus home to Sils Maria.

I love Sils Maria.
A walk from your hotel into the Fex Valley is sublime. Car free, so is peaceful. Charming little hamlets. We took a horse carriage ride in and walked back. There are small alps further on behind the Fex Hotel, I think Alp da Segl is 20 min further. Or you could take Furtschellas up and walk to Fex Hotel the hillside way and come through the centre road on return so you pass the farmhouses and church.

Yes, definitely bus to Soglio, an amazing bus ride, and little villages on the way. Nice walks from there or en route if you want to mix and match the bus ride with some walking.
We ate at the historic Palazzo Salis hotel there, beautiful building and garden.

Mel also mentions the Isola walk, that’s wonderful, as is other side of the lake, a bit more strenuous - Sils Baselgia to Grevasalvas, Blaunca, Maloja. Stupendous views. And fabulous meal at the Maloja Schweizerhaus afterwards. The timber facade is amazing.

Corvatschbahn will give you a great bird eye view of the valley, then head down to middle station (Murtel) stop and walk to Fuorcla Surlej. Again, stupendous views.

Waldhaus Sils-Maria is one of the best addresses in Upper Engadin.
If you want to dine somewher else, you may check:
Ristorante da Vittorio in Hotel Carlton, St. Moritz: North Italian food
Restaurant Ecco, St. Moritz
Restauranjt IGNIV Badrutts Palace by Andrea Caminiada, St. Moritz
Talvo by Dalsass, champfer, closed until June 22nd

You may check the trail from Murtel cableway station to Fuorcla Surlej (restaurant with glacier view) and then down to Val Roseg (restaurant) and Pontresina.

Bernina: the road is much less scenic than the railway line.
Tirano is of no interest. If you wont to drive up to there, continue to:
Aprica Pass - Edolo - Capo di Ponte with it's famous rock gravings (Unesco World Heritage site), Same way back.
or drive a loop to either
Stelvio Pass - Mustair Monastery (Unesco World Heritage site) - Ofen Pass - Zernez - St. Moritz
or
Colico/Lake Como - Chiavenna - Soglio - Maloja Pass - Sils Maria.

Love the Waldhaus! Been there and would love to go back in a heartbeat ...

Mel and Adelaidean suggested two hikes above Sils that can be - sort of - combined. Take Furtschellas cable car up and take the trail up to Alp Munt/Piz Grialetsch instead of the Lakes Trail. From Piz (Peak) Grialetsch you will have a stunning view of those lakes (and the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana and Champfer) and also the Fex Valley plus the snow-capped mountains nearby. Be forewarned that the ascent to P. Grialetsch is steep and almost 400 m elevation difference. If that's too much for you take the trail to Alp Munt instead (saves you about half of the elevation difference and there should be cows at the Alp plus you can get fresh milk and cheese there). If not, continue from Grialetsch to the plateau Plau da las Furtschellas and lake Sgrischus. From there via Piz Chüern down to Hotel Fex (you meet the trail from Alp Munt halfway down) and by horse drawn carriage or by foot back to your hotel.

A strong vote for Soglio.

On the other hand, a *must* for a first time visitor in the Upper Engadine is the hike from Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard with panoramic views of the entire upper valley, the lakes and the glaciers and peaks of the Bernina massif. (funicular up, chair lift down - included in the guest card.)
