Endinburg Airport
 

WE are planning a trip from US to Scotland/London....Does anyone know if it would be a bad choice to fly into Edinburg rather than London? WE are open to suggestions, never been to either place.

In terms of ease, just about anything that avoids London airports would be easier. We are also going from the US to Scotland... and plan on (hopefully!) flying into Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is actually very easy to get in and out of... we thought easier than Glasgow, but either is better than LGW or Heathrow, esp. if you're going to Scotland!

OK - reading your other threads -- do you still want to spend some time in London?

If so, what you really want is open jaw into one city and out of the other. You could fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow (either would work for visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow might get you cheaper fares) and out of London. Or you could do it in reverse order.

Open jaw will save you a lot of to-ing and fro-ing.

But - if you don't want to visit London - then just fly in/out of GLA or EDI.

We did London and Scotland last year, flying into Gatwick and out of Edinburgh (don't forget the "H" on the end, or you'll end up in South Texas;)). I think it's generally easier to get out of large airports than to get into them, so if you have a choice and want to fly open jaw (which I would reccommend), I would do it that way.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are easy enough to use because both are fairly small. Security at both is technologically quite sophisticated.

We went through Glasgow security for a flight to the States shortly after the mad bomber struck.

I expected to be greeted by a TSA type of circus with automatic weapons, helmeted troops, all types of pat down searches, etc. No circus, no frisking, no shoe removal , etc.

Security was done with electronics and it was therefore minimally invasive. I was amazed when my metal hip did NOT cause a panic. I learned after the fact that the security folks knew about it because the x-ray revealed it like a beacon in the night.

From Edinburgh to the city one can take a bus directly from the airport for a reasonable fee. We stayed at a B and B to the west of downtown and the bus passed close to where we were going.

To sum it up, we liked Edinburgh.
