Emoticons

Fodor's,

:)

It's the silly functions that make the forum the most entertaining. Well, some of us are pretty easy to keep entertained, but anyway... thanks.

Here's a ((b)) toast to the new feature that's sure to make some folks :-d and drive others :[

I'm going to be a >:) about it and give away the page where people can see all of the gifs.

i just crawled home from a pub..i must have tossed back a few too many....or maybe the green tea pills i take with my breakfast are having hallucinagenic side effects because if im not mistaken..the messages on this board here (blessed mother) are coming alive and it's nowhere near pleasant.

cigalechanta May 17th, 2003 08:18 PM

no, your pants are not so smart. that url doesn't work.

Clifton May 17th, 2003 08:24 PM

cigalechanta, You're right. I added the http portion and so did Fodors. Let's try this again.

Perhaps I'm just a grump, but wouldn't it have been more useful to finally allow us to use accents and apostrophes again??

Also, when giving times for train departures and the like, you can't use a colon as a separator between the minutes and hours, since ten o'clock now looks like this: 10:00... how about at least disabling that one?

Andre

Xenos May 18th, 2003 02:01 AM

André, you can use accents now. This link, showing how to do them all was posted in the € thread -
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/sgml/entities.html

e.g. for é you type in & eacute ; with no spaces in between.

To type times, just use a fullstop instead of a colon - 10.00 - please don't spoil our fun by asking for the emoticons to be disabled!

=:)

Andre May 18th, 2003 02:39 AM

Xenos,

Thanks for the info. However, I stand by my original post.

When I post something on this board, it almost always has accents or involves a time indication. Emoticons are never necessary (and seldom useful :-) ).

I don't think I'm going to resort to an HTML string every time I want to type an accent. Also, the :0 emoticon can be produced with a second key combination according to Clifton's link. Finally, many newbies will only "discover" the emoticons after they hit the "post" button (as I did today).

I'm not asking for the emoticons to be disabled, simply for Fodors to set their priorities straight.

Funny that they can't get the gif's right :P

indytravel May 18th, 2003 06:31 AM

Clifton, you're killing me with the rouge cows reference. :d

They even have an emoticon for me. ((D))

wren May 18th, 2003 07:14 AM

I just had to try this on out :@) . Hopefully, after eating our way through France in June, I won't resemble this emoticon!!!!

wren May 18th, 2003 07:17 AM

Couldn't resist this one either \:D/

starspinners May 18th, 2003 07:22 AM

Just waking up to a whole new world here on the West Coast! Gotta love all the new possibilities :O)

BozoTheClown May 18th, 2003 08:06 AM

I see 10:00 as 10:00. And, I run Linux, so, I don't <b>know</b> how to type an &eacute; without using HTML entities, <b>but</b> I just cut and pasted the eaccent from Xenos' post above. Let's see what happens. (I'm here after a preview/edit) It <b>converted</b> my cut and pasted &eacute; to an &amp;eacute;.

JAGIRL May 18th, 2003 08:24 AM

Ahhhhh the possibilities!! :-D
((@)) :S-
Wheeeeeeeeee!!!!!! What can I say? I'm :-d

Clifton May 18th, 2003 08:27 PM

I was thinking that time formats wouldn't be affected by these changes.

Testing...

10:00

I was thinking spaces had to preceed the character string to qualify for conversion.

Clifton May 18th, 2003 08:28 PM

Yep, time formats work fine with the colon.

CrazyCat May 20th, 2003 02:33 PM

I am still very new to internet chat rooms - so here's a dumb question, How do I use these emoticons? How do I enter these on my postings?
