My wife and I will be in the region for 8 days. Can we set up camp in Bologna and do day tours everyday or would you suggest adding another camp base?

It depends very much on where you want to go. Bologna is a good transportation hub, but it's a large region.

If you like using trains to get about then Bologna is a great choice, but you could also look at Ferrara say (fewer options and smaller city). It really depends where you want to go, and if you want to find accom in a city or say an agriturismo

Thank you for your input.we are actually unable to get suitable accommodations in Bologna. Can you suggest a different home base? We are going this September.

Once again, without knowing what you want to see and do while you're in Emilia Romagna, we're at a loss to recommend anything.

Do you have any specific things you want to see? What are your general interests? Will you be driving or using trains and buses?

And . . . what do you consider 'suitable accommodations'? Are properties in Bologna too expensive, or completely unavailable, or something else??

Good that you found a place to stay as Bologna is the perfect base for exploring the region either by train or by car. We were there for a month a few years ago and took several day trips, Parma, Modena, Florence and Ravenna. Also rented a car for a day to visit Dora and a few other small places. Very worthwhile though we did end up with a fine for driving in a bus lane ( allegedly! ) so that day did work out expensive. The food And produce in the city is exceptional. We came back a few kgs heavier!

We once accidentally drove in a bus lane in Bologna. A bus was right in front of us and blocked our view of the sign. We soon realised our error and changed lanes, but we were expecting a fine. Fortunately it never arrived. Either the bus was shielding us from the telecamera, or maybe we switched lanes in time.

We live fairly near Bologna but we almost never go there by car. The time we strayed into the wrong lane, we drove because we were returning late. Another time we were bringing some furniture to a relative; he met us at the city gate to pilot us in, so we would avoid the ZTL.

If you visit Bologna and want to have a car, it's best to stay outside the wall, because the ZTLs are mostly (maybe all) inside the wall.
