Emarrassed to ask about beer
 

We'll be in Paris in May. Knowing that France is famous for its wine, I'm embarrassed to ask about the best beers (for my husband who drinks nothing else). He drinks Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and is hoping to find something similar. I'm a wine drinker and am sure I'll have absolutely no problem. What can I say...a beer drinker to the end!

Well, don't be embarrassed. I drink only Miller Lite and you can't get it in the U.K. So, I would think something more obscure like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale won't be found. But I could be wrong. I sympathize with your husband. I hope someone more knowledgable than me can answer.
He'll just have to try something else as I do every trip to the U.K.

No need to be embarrassed. Plenty of beer drinkers in France. The best French beer is from Alscace. Kronenbourg is quite good and the most popular national brand but is more of a Pilsner style. Many Belgian beers are widely available in Paris and many are among the best in the world. Heineken is everywhere as well as many German brands.

It is good to know (before you pay the extra price) that some of the major 'foreign' brands are brewed in France. Things like Heineken or Bud (not called Budweiser in France due to Czech trademark issues) are brewed and bottled in the same places where the French beers are made.

Stella Artoise is a good beer, and widely available on draft in French cafes.

The best way for your husband to find a beer he likes is to just try every one available. :)

He might like Fischer Labelle or Kronenbourg 1664.

Perhaps you and your husband should pop into Culture Biere on the Champs Elysees for a drink. You can find some artisanal beers there. www.culturebiere.com

same can be said just about everywhere. here in the UK, many foreign brands are brewed in the UK. likewise, most brands are owned by just a few multinational firms - eg SAB-Miller, ambev, etc. it's just a fact of life. just because a foreign brand is brewed in france alongside french brands, doesn't mean that it should necessarily cost the same as the french brands that come out of the factory.

Of course not. Companies can charge whatever the market will bear. It's a good reason not to buy the more expensive brand.
