When I find a thread particularly interesting or informative, I email it to myself. The last few days, however, the email just seems to vanish into the ether, never to land. Anybody else have this problem? Or a solution?

Happened to me also, send a thread to myself and a friend this morning... tried again a little while ago... still waiting for it!

I just tried it and never got it, either. Probably coincidentally, but at the exact same time, I did receive a suspicious email with probably a virus on it. I've been getting a few virus attachements lately in junk email, but have Symantec which quarantines them.

As I recall from the past in using it, it isn't really that useful a function anyway. It doesn't really email you the thread, does it? I thought it just emailed you the URl for the thread, so if you want to read it, you have to be logged on and access Fodors and hope it is still there. I guess that's better than nothing, but I originally thought it would do what it said, just like you can email the entire text of articles in newspapers to yourself, if you want.

You can always just cut and paste the thread, I do that sometimes, or just print it out (and then I know the title if I want to check for new additions). You can just save the URL yourself to a file or email it to yourself, also.

I tend to cut and paste threads of interest, some get deleted and email is useless in that case.

vedette--When I want to keep a thread, I respond to it (with "ttt," or anything). Then, when I click on my name, it appears with every thread I've posted on.

Downside: I never get rid of it, sometimes a bother.

There is a new virus infecting e-mail, I saw on the news today. That may be some of the problem but also, be very careful what you open, it's a bad one from what I heard.

Your ISP may be trashing it before it gets to you, especially if it is a large file.

A lot of commercial emails that I get have started expressing concern that I set my program just so to allow myself to continue receiving email from them. Also, when I email pictures to my kids, one never receives them. I think a lot of ISPs are implementing policies and tools to protect us from malicious mail, and often that means they just zap it, so you never know that you didn't get it.

My anti-virus program will delete the body of email that it considers suspicious, but it then lets me get the mail, with a notice that it was altered by my protector; I think that is the best way to do it, but that is apparently beyond the capability of a lot of ISPs.

I thought I had a lot of stuff safely saved as email, but the gremlins truncated a file and I lost it all.

So now I keep two copies of what I think is important. One on email; and one where I cut and paste the thread into a wordprocessing document. (I have multiple hard drives, so I can back it up to a spare one, although the very best protection would be off-site storage).

It doesn't email you the whole thread when it works, it just emails the url in the form of a clickable link. So that would make it not a large file, I think.

It is a very small file as it's only about one line of print. Even if it were the article, it wouldn't be that large.

I know my email isn't deleting it for unusual reasons, as it doesn't do that. I think it's not getting sent.

Threads are archived forever -- usually. Sometimes they disappear, though, and sometimes Fodors deliberately deleted them if someone resurrected them and them added something Fodors didn't like. Very occasionally they disappear for no reason.

Uh-oh! I e-mail threads to myself frequently and sent this one to myself a couple of hours ago. It still hasn't arrived. This is the first time this has ever occurred since I started using the board more than eight years ago. I wonder what's up?

Here's what you do ----

Click on the TITLE of the thread you like. This changes the URL to the exact right one. Then bookmark it just like you would bookmark any web site you want to return to.

I just emailed it to myself and it arrived within seconds. I noticed that it did come with an attachment.

I suspect your ISP, whoever that is, may be blocking email based on unknown criteria, such as size, or having an attachment.

Christina, there is a difference between your ISP and your email program. Your ISP is the company through which you connect to the internet, and if they block an email to you, you would probably never know.

Vedette, since I know the function is working, at least for me, I would suggest you call your ISP and ask them why you are not getting certain emails.

Another possibility, especially if you use a Hotmail account: it might be winding up in your "Junk E-Mail" folder.

That's where I look first when I've e-mailed an item to myself - no matter how often I tell Hotmail that it's NOT junk!

Memphis, do you know you can go to "options" in Hotmail and change the settings so everything goes to your in-box. Or nothing. Or some of it. Your mailbox has 3 options.
