elsinore castle in copenhagen
 

are there tours of elsinore castle?
how far is it time wise from copenhagen?
i imagine you can take a train there, or is driving the best option?

The castle is called Kronborg; it is in the town of Helsinborg, a nice 1-hr train ride from Copenhagen at the end of one commuter rail line.

A great day: Train Cope to Helsingor (Elsinore in English) and then do the short walk to Hamlet's Castle (Kronborg Castle), which juts out into the Sound.

Return to station - note the many booze and cigarette shops in Helsingor - catering to the Swedish invasion to buy such stuff much cheaper than at home (at least was this way last time i visited)

Then hop the train to Humlebaek, from the station lies Louisiana, one of Europe's primo outdoor statue parks, lovingly overlooking the Sound

if still energized on train Humlebaek-Cope get off at a station that is a short walk from Bakken, the world's oldest amusement park and one which has lots of entertainment Tivoli style but it's all free (except rides) - neat restaurants, beer gardens, etc.

oh i see, kronborg castle, but in the town of elsinore/helsinborg. is there a charge for the walks/tour? how much would the round trip train ticket be?

There's a fee for entry; we were on our own inside the castle, except for a brief talk/tour of part of the below-ground fort (lucky timing that the English language tour was about to begin as we arrived).

I also recommend the lovely Louisiana museum.

We used a 24-hr rail pass so did not buy a train ticket for that trip.

Look into the Klip Kard or whatever they call it for travel all over Zealand as the area is called.

You clip the card for each zone you travel thru - also good in Copenhagen - cheaper probably then buying regular tickets, which though aren't all that much - perhaps $20 round-trip or less.

Frederiksborg is considered the showpiece castle of Denmark - lovingly set in a lake - train to Hillerod, abut 30 mins or so from Cope then short walk to town center and hop boats to castle (or can walk around the lake)

yes i agree with Ira if had to chose one castle this would be it

But Kronborg, its assoc with Hamlet are tenuous but a calling card for some, is a fortress opposed to pleasure dome at Frederksborg but the setting, out in the Sound is stunning so would be hard to chose.

You could easily do both as trains run regularly Hillerod the short distance to Helsingor - do both if possible.

Fredericksborg is great too, it is the national history museum and has lovely gardens too, but the Helsingor fortress is pretty impressive too. Do both.

Roskilde is another fine day trip, for the Viking Ship Museum and the cathedral where all Danish monarchs, since about 1300, are entombed.

Not to mention a week's worth of fun in Copenhagen itself. I guess I need to go back.

Not much Shakespeare to be seen at Kronberg. I remember only one room with a few photos of some stage productions of Hamlet. But the castle, its setting, and history are still interesting.

'there's something rotten in Denmark' - no not much about the Bard there though i believe they may have Shakespeare plays in the summer

yeah, i just want to go to take it all in, so i can tick that off my list. i'm a big shakespeare fan (just went to the globe this january) but also would just love to see copenhagen!
