Ellmau, Austria. Info appreciated

My wife and I would like to visit a small village in the Tyrol area. We prefer to stay
in small places with a lot of local character and without a lot of tourists. Ellmau seems like a strong possibility. We usually stay in small bed and breakfasts and inns, but I haven't found any in Ellmau. There's a promising looking hotel however,Hochfilzer Hotel. It looks like more of a family hotel, but I like their spirit on the website.
We'll be taking a train from Salzburg to St Johann and cabbing to Ellmau. We'd just like to relax, hike (nothing strenuous) and walk to other nice villages if possible.Any info would be appreciated.

Ellmau doesn't fit that description, however there are mostly Germans there. Thre are tons! of B&Bs in Ellmau, don't worry. Google for "Ellmau Privatzimmer" for a start.

My tip for a small village would be Kals (Eastern Tyrol, close to Matrei). If you're lucky you just might see an eagle flying. Enough B&Bs (Privatzimmer) there too, just a lot cheaper. (But don't tell everybody ;-) )

I've been skiing there and stayed in the Hochfilzer. I liked the village and I liked the hotel. It was very gemutlich.

The best small village in Austria has to be Alpbach in Tirol. Great skiing also. Ellmau is good but Alpbach is better

Ellmau is one of my favorite places in the area. There is a tram going yup to the Harter (Sp?) Kaiser and great placs to walk from the top station. you have fabulous views from the top.

Although people replied to you mosatly in terms of skiing, (which isn't good nearly anywhere right now), I have been there only in the fall. Across the valley is the Wilde Kaiser, and it offers also nice hikes and is very scenic.

Although it isn't in Tirol, my vote for a lovely small alpine village is Maria Alm. This fall we are planning to holiday in a small B&B near Haus in the province of Styria not far from Schladming. Friends have stayed there and recommend it highly. Very reasonable prices and surrounded by hiking, walking and cycling trails galore. Can't wait!
