"Electronic Passport"

I need to renew my US passport. I read that the passport office would begin issuing Electronic Passports starting in 2005 and by mid-2006 "nearly all new ones would be issued in this new format."

Has this actually happened?

Thank you.

Does it make a difference..?
but, according to the official website, yes, they have begun issuing them.

Hi C,

Is there a reason why you care?

((I))

Travelnut, I don't know if it makes a difference or not, and I guess that was the real reason for my question.

Are they being issued and has anyone actually benefited from what they say on the website:

"Moreover, when used at ports-of-entry equipped with electronic chip readers, the new passport will provide for faster clearance through some of the port-of-entry processes."

Ira,

Just curiosity.

Probably when everybody has an electronic passport, old-fashioned t*rrorists will disappear, and we'll deal with a new and better class of high tech t*rrorists.

I just discovered a forbidden word on the forum!

According to the article referenced by Travelnut, they began being issued in August in Colorado. They will gradually be introduced in other passport centers. I got a new passport this month from San Francisco. If there is a chip in the back cover it sure is invisible. My new passport looks exactly like the old one (except I look older).
