10 days from Berlin and back
We land in Berlin on Apr. 29th. and have a car rented for 10 days. We want to make a circle and end up back in Berlin spendining the time in northern Germany ( including Hamburg and Bremen). We like castles, restaurants, hotels, historic architecture and art.
Any suggestions regarding these interests in the NOT TO BE MISSED catagory would be greatly appreciated.

You can drive a loop including Schwerin (castle), Lübeck (medieval city), Hamburg, Bremen, Münster (historic city, castles in the vicinity, esp. Nordkirchen and Vischering), Harz towns (Quedlinburg, Wernigerode) and back.
Would be a perfect trip with lots of historic architecture. Maybe a little too much for ten days.

We had a good thread going about Northern Germany recently but I can't seem to find it - not in my own posting list or via the search engine! Argh.
Anyway, we did a tour of Hamburg, Luebeck and Ruegen in October 2007. I do not have a trip report posted, but here are my photos:

We only had a limited amount of time, but I would recommend at least a couple of days in Hamburg. It is very cosmopolitan with great shopping and dining. Definitely take a harbor tour, go up the tower of the ruined St. Nikolaikirche for incredible views, and take a walk along the canals and past the old merchant houses.
Luebeck is gorgeous, architecturally fascinating, and I highly recommend the Schiffergesellschaft restaurant (my pictures don't do it justice, but it's like stepping back in time about 500 years).
The island of Ruegen is a little off the beaten path but well worth a visit. We stayed in Binz, a lovely seaside town, took a hike to the Koenigstuhl cliffs, and visited the Kap Arkona lighthouses.
