Elba by train and ferry
Can anyone help with train/bus travel between Pisa and Piombivo-in order to catch the ferry to Elba Island? DH has been researching but has found legthy travel times. Virtually impossible for "old people".
Thank you |

It appears that you are well-versed in the above. Can you help us? We even have a hotel picked out on Elba island! Thanks |
PalenQ-ps. We will not be driving.

I looked at the possibilities for train travel between Pisa and Piombino (note spelling) and found a number of options. I checked only weekday optons, so the weekend may vary.
If you are willing to travel at very early in the morning (6:43), you can take direct R train #3103 that takes 1 hour 8 minutes. Most other options take at least 1 hour 30 minutes (depending on connection time) and require at least one change at Campiglia Marittima to a bus. There is a direct afternoon R train #11889 at 14:12 that takes 1 hour 34 minutes. |
Thank you ellenem for the advice. On which site did you find it? Maybe we can explore it too.

There is also minibus service some days from the Pisa airport to the Piombino ferry dock.

I found the schedules at the official Italian Railway website:
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html I chose a day next week since the system often won't show all trains for dates too far ahead. The schedule should be about the same. Just pick he same day of the week. However, Jean's link looks like the best option yet. |
The minibus would be great BUT we will be there in October and it appears that it ends in September. I will look at ellenem's link.
Thank you, Jean and ellenem for the links. |
The schedules are also on www.bahn.de
I've travelled to Piombino by train several times myself. There are two stations in Piombino. Trains go into the town station, then reverse to go to the port station, Piombino Marittima. For the ferries, you need to stay on the train to Piombino Marittima. There are three ferry companies (www.toremar.it, www.moby.it and www.blunavytraghetti.com) and sailings are frequent. Piombino is a miserable place with an old steelworks: there is no reason to wait there any longer than necessary. |
GeoffHamer-Thanks for your info. DH has resolved the problems and we are going to Elba in Oct.!!!
