marvelous report - I'm adding the Liberation and Resistance museums for our trip in September - for DH and me, the 10th visit to Paris, with - please, God! - more to come! But for our friends, the first trip (and then we'll head to Normandy).
I just within the past hour told our friends they should read Is Paris Burning? It's indeed a terrific book, and I loved the politics and other info found there. The U.S. actually did not want DeGualle to head the country, and preferred the communists! That stunned me - what would this so incredible city be like if it had been communist for these decades? sheesh! This will be our 4th trip where we'll rent an apartment in Paris instead of using a hotel (except for our last night there, after we've spent several weeks wandering France). I can't recommend that enough, especially for repeat visitors who don't benefit as much from the use of a dedicated front-desk and in-house concierge system. And we've decided that the Marais works best for us for staying, having tried 4 different arrondissements over past trips. We love the atmosphere and neighborhood feel there, so accessible to the other areas, but a bit quieter at night that some of them. Amazingly, we've never found time for the roast chicken and potatoes on prior trips, but are determined to accomplish it this time - along with some nice wine! I'm saving this report to my files, and forwarding it on to our friends, illustrating just how great their days will be. Thank you for the report! |
Excellent read and incredibly useful report -- thanks, ssanders! I will be a first-timer in a few short weeks!

We'll be in Paris in Sept., and I'm interested in the History and Mystery book. Would you tell me where to find it? Thanks.

My version is the 2008 edition (still fairly accurate), and it's very hard to find at a decent price. There is an American version titled Frommer's 24 Great Walks in Paris that appears to be identical. The 2008 edition is available used on Amazon for under $10. There is also a 2011 edition of the Frommer's version -- even more expensive than the 2008 UK version. (UK Amazon has the 2008 UK edition used for about 12 GBP if that is easier for you.) LIBRARIES: WorldCat.Org can locate the 2011 US version in nearby libraries -- just put your zip code in the following URL after loc=: http://www.worldcat.org/title/24-gre...2490?loc=94530 SS |
I'm just seeing this report now and really enjoyed it. Thanks.

Thanks for the information, ssander. I'll try Amazon.

Kerouac....
Just re-reading your post: This has of course been an excellent report, but one of the most mundane things is one of the most important: one should always have more than one payment card on a trip like this. That is really important and bears repeating...we overkill, carrying three different credit cards and three different ATM cards. (Plus our leftover Euros --- and a few hundred emergency American dollars which we keep in the safe.) A little over-paranoid, perhaps, but we have had situations where more than one card was rejected. :-) SS |
Yikes...It's been over a month, and I just realized that I never posted a link to my pix:

Lateday traveler...
Just finished reading Is Paris Burning? Thanks for the recommendation. It was fantastic...and having been to the Leclerc Liberation Museum and the Underground Museum really made the book more interesting. (I'm a history buff.) SS |
Nice pictures. A virtual trip to Paris.
