EHIC for Americans?
 

I heard this morning on TV a doctor's advise: get a free European health insurance card before going to Europe, just call the embassy of the country here in the US.

I have a worldwide coverage from work, what is the difference if I'll have the EHIC in addition to this or not?

What about Americans on Medicare, will this card cover them?

And I will still need emergency evacuation insurance in addition to EHIC, right?

The EHIC (European Heath Insurance Card) is for EEA residents an entitles them to whatever coverage the "locals" get when travelling to other EEA countries.

If you're not a resident of an EEA country or somehow otherwise covered by a EEA national heath service - which most Americans aren't - then you can't get an EHIC.

You neeed to be a resident of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland and be a national or have a citizenship of another EU/EEA country, or are regarded as a family member (partner, spouse or dependant of an EU/EEA citizen) to be eligible for EHIC.

I asked only because the doc on TV said it's for Americans. Maybe I've missed if he mentioned "dual citizenship"
