Editors:Site extremely slow or not functioning

I've had difficulty accessing the site today.
European travel doesn't come up on the scree in its entirity. Also..when trying to post on US the server is extremely slow to not working at all.

Betsy Feb 3rd, 2003 09:18 AM

As a proud pin-wearing Fodorite, I'm about to throw my hands up and leave permanently. Never thought I'd say this, but the frustration with access and posting has just become too great to tolerate.

How about some feedback from HQ about what's going on and the plans to remedy the problems?

Patrick Feb 3rd, 2003 09:36 AM

Anyone in his or her right mind would have given up with all these problems. I'm ashamed to say my addiction is so great that I'm unable to do that. I leave for an hour or two and come back thinking surely it will now work. I guess the fact that it works perfectly for an hour or so at a time gives me a ray of hope that sometime in the future they'll get this fixed.

This site has become so bad and frustrating, its a joke. If you want to block me, so what!

Whey not dump the damn registration stuff so we can post without trying for 2 days. The new formatting isn't working so guess what should be done???

second try.

Lesli Feb 3rd, 2003 11:31 AM

The editors do not routinely check the boards for these sorts of messages. If you want to complain and/or offer constructive criticism, go to the main Fodors page and click on "Write to us."

Messages sent this way actually get read by someone who works at Fodors and might be able to do something in response.

janis Feb 3rd, 2003 02:31 PM

it seems every day or two a different glitch pops up. First it was the "next 50" wouldn't display, then it would kick me to the log on screen even tho' I was already on, then nothing will post, then, then . . . . .

Everything they fix breaks something else :-(

GrammieDale Feb 3rd, 2003 04:26 PM

I have a few problems since registration (one of which was my own fault), but all were minor. Of course, as we all can see, there has been a huge drop off in postings, which I thought was because people didn't want to register. If it's because of technical problems, I guess the editors should investigate ASAP to keep people from abandoning this great site.

Dale

It's an absolute nightmare to try to reply to a post, IMO. It has taken me up to 15 tries to get a response to " take." I don't have time for that. I do this in bewteen all kinds of other tasks. If it doesn't get better, I just won't be able to post.

icithecat Feb 3rd, 2003 07:04 PM

As I have stated elsewhere, it is all in the technique.

Seriously though, the authentication on every posting is the problem. Authentication should only be at loggin, not at every post.

The other thing I have noticed is that indexing seams to be instantaneous. Maybe that is also eating resources.

rex Feb 4th, 2003 09:33 AM

Indexing is not instantaneous, nor even within hours, but seems to be keeping nearly current, to within 24 hours or less, perhaps. I have wondered if that is the change - - not the implementation of registration - - that has led to some poor performance. It's worth enduring some rocky access to get improved indexing, more frequently updated.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
Christina Feb 4th, 2003 01:26 PM

I've had all the terrible problems as others and Fodors never responded to my email as others... however, indexing is not instantaneous, seems no diff. at all. I can't retrieve posts from several days ago on a search and I know the word in the title. Also, Rex said he could find one immed. about family and provence and it would not come up when I used exact same search. So, I think if they were, they've stopped and deleted the recent indexing.

jahoulih Feb 4th, 2003 01:41 PM

That's odd, Christina. I just tried searching for "family and provence" (without the quotation marks) and not only did that thread come up, but so did the thread looking for it, which was only created about five hours ago.

Michael Feb 4th, 2003 02:31 PM

For me reading is not a problem, posting is, but not much more than before. Perhaps this is due to my connection which is a lowly modem connection. When there is heavy traffic on the internet or my provider (a university, so I can tell when they are busy), connection to any web site can be very slow, but reclicking will at times break the connection cycle and get me in right away.

Hiroshi Feb 5th, 2003 01:21 AM

If someone complains, they should say that problems hurt the Fodors product. They probably think that people who only post are cockroaches, but some people who post also buy.
