Hi LOTRHP. No offence taken ! A lot of people in Edinburgh think Leith is still dodgy You can't really see the Firth of Forth (the estuary into the sea) from the Shore area as there are still actual docks in the way. But the Shore (where I recommended you get off the 22 bus for pubs & restaurants) is a pleasant street running alongside the Water of Leith (small river, canalised at that point) so you can have a nice stroll alongside the water there (we have 7 cygnets at the moment !), and sit outside some of the pubs facing the water. There are some views here although none exactly show you what I mean - http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_street...ws_-_shore.htm.
Actually, if you are staying in the New Town you can walk largely alongside the Water of Leith from Canonmills to Leith - it's about 1.5 miles I think. See http://www.waterofleith.org.uk/river/river.shtm.
If you go to see the former Royal Yacht Britannia, that's about half a mile west along the Firth of Forth & you can see and get nearer to the Forth there, although the surroundings are not so scenic as the Shore.
Hi Nikki. I'd forgotten about the Harbour Apartments. Actually I'd never heard of them until about 6 months ago when another Fodorite stayed there, and DH & I met her & her boyfriend for a pint or two at one of the pubs on the Shore ! They said the aprtment was lovely, with fantastic views. It's a bit away from the centre of things but walkable to the Shore and as I expect you know they run a shuttle bus into the city centre. It's also near to a couple of nice pubs in Newhaven, facing the Forth, the Old Chain Pier and the Star Bank Inn. It's a good idea for reasonably priced accommodation, especially for >2 adults and during the festivals.

Hi all.
Sheila, thanks for mentioning that - I will certainly do my best !
Nikki, it would be a pleasure to meet you - what dates will you be here ? We are not yet *quite* fully booked up for August...
GD, the cows were scattered around the city as part of a 'Cow Parade' two or three years ago. It's something that has happened in various cities - not sure where it started. I think the general idea is that local artists & celebs decorate a cow each and they are auctioned off for chairity. A few seem to have taken permanent root.
