Edinburgh Travel Arrangements
I am planning a trip to Edinburgh with hubby this May. I live in the DC area and am unable to decide the best travel route. Cost is a determining factor as is convenience. I can depart from BWI or National (preferably not Dulles). But where too? To London/Glasgow/Edinburgh? London fare cheapest but how difficult a journey? Direct to Edinburgh most costly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheapest internal flights are probably at www.bmibaby.com (they fly from Heathrow to Edinburgh) Train will probably be a hassle with all your luggage and will cost more than the cheap flights BMI Baby offer (taxes are more than the fare itself). Not sure if US residents can book flights on bmibaby as I've never done it. Good luck & enjoy.

You could fly via Amsterdam to Edinburgh.
If you do fly to Lopndon (either Heathrow or Gatwick) I wouldn't - even though the one way train fare is from £12.50 (under 20USD) - recommend hauling yourself into the centre of London to catch the train. Both BMI & BA fly to Edinburgh from London airports Note that if you do book a flight to Edinburgh separately from your trans Atlantic flight you LOSE your increased baggage allowance so trying to go cheap may be a false economy |
Thanks for the information. Taking the train seems more trouble then its worth. BMI is inexpensive but am leaning toward covenience and paying the extra for a direct flight. Cheapest flight on Continental - Seat Guru says the plane is small for a transatlantic flight. So now I'm weighing convenience and comfort. Will look into the Amsterdam route. I must say I was not expecting the limited choices available - but I am determined!

You might investigate the cost of flying to Toronto and taking Zoom airlines from there to Glasgow. The quoted price for Zoom is C$199 one way or US$170.
